Introduction
Before we get started, heres a little bit of background about who I am and what I have done in my past to bring me to this point in life where I am writing a book on franchising. I got my start right out of high school as a restaurant manager for a fast-food chain. Thats when I got my first actual look at franchising. I worked for a master franchisor of Taco Bell throughout the Sacramento area, helping the restaurants grow and become more profitable.
First, I want to address the fact that not all franchises are restaurants; its just where I happened to get my first look. Overall, I really enjoyed the fact that established restaurants had all the systems and processes in place. As I was helping the master franchisor with managing some of her locations and day-to-day tasks, I quickly learned all the procedures. The procedures made it very easy to train people; you knew who you needed and when you needed them.
With the restaurant business, there are certain times of day, obviously, that are busier than others. We knew, based on sales, exactly how many employees we needed and what locations they were needed in, which made for very simple operations. It all felt so logical to me, and it felt really good to be able to walk into any of the Taco Bells in the Sacramento area and know that Id be doing the exact same things no matter the location.
As I traveled the region, there was only one bad thing I noticed when I walked into these different restaurants. There were certain managers who had been there before me, and they werent exactly following those policies and procedures. Maybe they thought they knew better. Nevertheless, they were making changes here and thereand those decisions werent paying off.
I was actually placed at those locations to put everything back on track, to make them run smoothly and efficiently according to the policies and procedures that Taco Bell had outlined. I learned that if youre a new manager, your first day is not the right time to try to make improvements to proven systems and processes. Spend the time needed to get them in place, and then spend the time to maintain the right results. Later, when youre a top owner, you might be able to add new ideas. There is room for growth, but you should get to know the improvement process first and foremost.
As a teenager, I definitely saw that franchising was a great option. I would later learn much more about it (especially that its not limited to restaurants), but Im grateful for my first experience in the franchise world.
I then moved on to a 24-hour food chain, Lyons, which is similar to Dennys. Then, after seven teen years in the food service business, it was time for something else, so I went to school and became an engineer. I received my degree in electrical engineering and physics at Sacramento State University and went to work for Motorolas semiconductor division. While working, I also received an MBA in management information systems and read a lot of business books. I thought I would be able to advance my corporate career by doing so. It turns out I didnt, but I learned a lot of valuable information I would use later.
Being in the corporate world, I found I was always working on somebody elses terms. I wanted to work on my own terms. When you have your own business, youre doing everything on your terms and building it up for yourself. Everyone is trying to build better lives for themselves and their families. Thats really what drove me into looking to do franchising and ultimately getting out of my corporate job and buying a franchise.
I have a trusted team, and we have some real-world pictures of what people have done working with me and working with a franchise consultant. Were going to go through the greatest plan for building wealth in franchising, the investment levels of time and money, and what financing options are available to you. Well go through the six processes of investing, step by step, and what to look for in a franchise, which ties into what you might expect to get out of one.
My motivation is to help others. I was helping a lot of people when I was an engineer. I was helping a lot of engineers and was doing quite a bit of training. Ive always liked to help people. Ill explain to you as we go through the book how I found the franchise consultant who would help me find a franchise for myself that I felt good about. My motivation has become taking you through the process of what I did to find a franchise that supported me in achieving my freedom, and to help you achieve yours.
There are many different franchises out there that require different amounts of your timepassive, semi-passive, and full-timeand youll have the freedom to decide what fits you best. Thats the whole idea behind franchising and owning your own businessyouve got the freedom to decide what you want to do. Throughout this book, my ambition has been to make all of this simpler for you to figure out which franchise is best for you.
