FOREWORD
I started my business the Australian Writers Centre more than 10 years ago. I was clear from day one that it wasnt a side hobby. It was a serious business that I wanted to grow and I knew I wanted to focus on providing the best writing courses in the country.
Not everyone is able to be this clear about what their business idea is and how to take their idea and create and start their own business. I meet a lot of people who are thinking about starting a business and I ask them: What kind of business do you want to start? and Why do you want to start this business? because these are the important questions. Many of the people I meet, especially in the tech start-up space, just want to find a business they can scale and sell.
Sometimes you can see they dont actually care about the business itself. Its really hard to sustain yourself in a business if you dont actually care about the product.
Today, more than ever, people dream about starting their own businesses, from young people choosing that option rather than work for someone else, to many women who are looking for a way to blend their professional expertise into a business that allows them to enjoy their family. And there are people in later stage of their careers looking for more meaningful expression of how they can create an income and lifestyle for themselves through starting a business of their own.
People of all ages are looking at how a business can be a viable alternative to working for someone else.
The truth is that success does not come easy in business. There are constant challenges and potentially multiple setbacks.
The pre-startup phase, the dreaming, idealistic and imaginative phase, is when you are the most excited and at the same time impatient; you just want to get going. Youre eager to take your idea and run with it. This is the phase where good decision making is super important.
Because the idea generation phase is so exciting, any mention of Planning seems so stifling, limiting and constraining. And this is just what most getting started in business books are full of: business planning!
Ingrid Thompson has identified a gap in the market for a pre-startup book that isnt all about writing business plans. So You Want to Start a Business is a book that needed to be written and Ingrid is the perfect person to write it. Ingrid has successfully done what she suggests her readers do. This is a book that will help you decide many of the essential aspects of getting started in business.
Ingrid takes you, the reader, through the 7 steps to guide you in how to approach creating and starting your own business. She starts with Who are You to start a business? which is probably one of the most important chapters in the book. Who you are underpins your business success.
