This is an updated and re-titled version of the book Stock Market Investing For Everyone, which was released in 2019.

I have added new and updated material to the book, and because of that, this new book had to be released as a new title.

Introduction

We are in the homestretch now. Just a few more minutes. Be still, or the scar will look worse. An authoritative voice filled the room, although I could not tell the source. I was too blinded by the glaring surgical lights shining in my eyes to see anything except some faint shadows in the periphery above me. Dont worry doc, I thought to myself as I tried not to shake from fear, Im not moving a muscle.

That was 14 years ago, and it was now 1988. The repressed memory shot to the forefront of my brain as I handed the slick talking, but downright friendly, Toyota salesperson the cashiers check for $15,051. Basically all the money I had to my name. As I handed him the check, he flipped the keys to me. The shiny red Toyota MR-2 sports car was mine.

Pig face!

As I walked towards the car, the little voices came back. Cruel, heartless second graders. My friends only a few weeks prior were now hated enemies, mercilessly taunting and bullying me.

His cheek had a hole in it, so they had to fill the hole with pig skin. Hes a pig face! one girl authoritatively exclaimed. Thats so gross!

Why now? Why after 14 years were these tormentors returning, filling my head with a cacophony of sing song taunts?

$15,051. That was why.

Actually, the amount in 1974 was $5,500. That is what the owners of the dog paid for disfiguring my 7 year old face. Actually, their homeowners insurance paid it, and their vicious dog, who had bitten numerous people before me, lived happily ever after with his owners. I, on the other hand, endured months of painful visits to the plastic surgeon, and years of mocking, for the scar on my cheek.

$5,500 did not nearly cover my pain and suffering the past 14 years, but it eventually paid for my new car-sort of college graduation present to myself. Maybe I should be thanking that dog instead? No!

I was lucky, I suppose, and could have been even luckier. My mom took that $5,500, and for all those years, faithfully invested it in certificates of deposit (CD) from local banks. CD rates were around 6-10% back then, a far cry from the 1-2% annual savings rate returns we now endure. She was able to grow that $5,500 into over $15,000. Plus, as guardian of the money, she kept me from frittering it away when I first turned 18.
