Preface

Wouldnt it be great if everyone knew and understood their strengths so we could all work together more effectively? Now you can take the next step to advance the strengths mission. Expanding Your Strengths introduces you to theme dynamics and includes access to an interactive Web app you can use with the people you manage and coach. The portability of the Web app allows you to pull it up on your desktop, phone or tablet or on third-party devices. Access the Web app anywhere from your own office to a clients conference room to a college classroom for coaching sessions, one-on-one discussions or high-level meetings.

This powerful resource allows you to dynamically select theme pairings, see how different talent themes combine and complement each other, and explore the StrengthsFinder talent themes one by one. Take your relationships to the next level. Use this book and Web app to create stronger teams, coach friends and associates, and develop your employees.

To get the full benefit of this book and accompanying Web app, you will have already taken the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment and received your results. If you havent taken StrengthsFinder and would like to purchase a code to take the assessment, please go to www.strengthscenter.com.

Talents, strengths and theme dynamics

Talents are the patterns of thought, feeling and behavior that are innate in each of us. Every person is unique, of course, but we all have hardwired talents that describe and predict who we are and how we operate. The Clifton StrengthsFinder assesses and ranks your talents into 34 broad categories, or themes. Your five most dominant talent themes (your top five) are the ones you use most consistently.

Most peoples top five themes fit in one or two of the four strengths domains: . For instance, its more likely that someone would have these top five themes, which represent two of the four strengths domains: Analytical, Ideation, Learner (all Strategic Thinking themes), Empathy and Relator (both Relationship Building themes) than these top five themes, which are spread across all the domains: Achiever (Executing theme), Relator (Relationship Building theme), Significance (Influencing theme), Connectedness (Relationship Building theme) and Analytical (Strategic Thinking theme).

Recently, Gallup scientists analyzed which themes are most likely and least likely to appear together in an individuals top five themes. While it is possible for someone to have vastly different themes, its also very rare. See the Appendix for more details on theme combinations.

Knowing your dominant talent themes and how they work is valuable because they show you the areas where you will naturally do best and where youll find the most success and well-being. Understanding your talents is also the first step to turning them into strengths. When you start with your natural talents and add skills, knowledge and practice, you can build your talents into a strength the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance. Gallup research shows that people who have the opportunity to use their strengths are more than three times as likely to say they have an excellent quality of life compared with those who dont.

Theme dynamics: 1 + 1 = 3

Gallup scientists and strengths coaches have known for decades that the more you understand your talents, the more intentionally you can use them. But your talents dont exist in isolation. You are not just one thing or just five things. Defining yourself or someone else using a single talent theme is not accurate or complete because the talents in that theme are just part of who someone is. No one is Strategic all the time. No one is always a Relator. You use various talents to respond to different situations, and you frequently use several themes at once, whether you know it or not.

Your talent themes are constantly interacting and combining as you react to different circumstances. Further, your themes of talent interact and combine with other peoples talent themes. This is what Gallup calls theme dynamics . Think of theme dynamics as the chemistry of themes. Like the elements of the periodic table, each theme has its own properties. But when different themes or elements interact, they create something brand new and more powerful than either theme alone.

Picture 3Watch Curt Liesveld, Gallup Advanced Learning & Development Consultant, explain theme dynamics in the video What is Theme Dynamics?

Sometimes talent themes enhance and magnify each other, such as the influencing power of Activator and Command or the social ease of Woo and Communication. Other times, themes modify each other; Empathy can monitor the emotional effects of Command, and Command can support Empathy when actions create bad feelings. And fortunately, they can also regulate each other. People with, say, Focus in their top five themes can find it very helpful to summon their Adaptability when they need to be more spontaneous.

The more you examine theme dynamics in your life, the more you will understand how your talents make you who you are. That process can be a lot of fun, but its also valuable. As you start to see how your themes work together, you can make the most of your unique talents and start turning them into strengths. But dont stop there. Think about how your talents can work with other peoples talents how they might enhance, modify or regulate each other. Consider how you can use theme dynamics to form powerful and productive partnerships.

How managers can apply theme dynamics

Managers can use theme dynamics in the workplace as a tool to create more effective partnerships and teams. When you understand the theme dynamics of your team, you can be more creative and more intentional about positioning people so they can do their best work. Not only does that increase the efficiency and versatility of your team, but it allows your team members to focus on what they do best every day, which increases their engagement and productivity. Compared with those who do not get to focus on what they do best, people who have the opportunity to use their strengths are six times as likely to be engaged in their jobs. They also have 7.8% greater individual productivity and 12.5% greater productivity at the team level.

Picture 5Watch how two coworkers do what they do best to successfully and efficiently tackle a project together in the video Powerful Complementary Partners Get Work Done Faster and Better.

Even better, the more clearly you understand your team members theme dynamics, the more accurate and constructive feedback you can give them about their talents and strengths. That feedback also boosts your teams engagement and profitability. Managers who focus on their team members strengths have a remarkably low active disengagement rate of 1%. And teams that receive strengths feedback have 8.9% greater profitability. Clearly, managers have an incentive to understand and coach to workers talents and strengths.
