Cracking the Reading Section
The Reading Section of the CBEST consists of 50 multiple-choice questions based on information presented in a variety of passages, tables, and graphs. Passage topics are drawn from a variety of sources, and are designed to simulate high school and college-level materials, student textbooks, teachers guides, and written materials on psychology or student behavior. These passage topics will vary in difficulty, and are drawn from a number of different fields, such as social sciences, humanities, health, and consumer affairs.
You will be able to answer all reading questions without having any specialized knowledge about the subject matter (in fact, bringing in outside knowledge will often lead you to an incorrect answer). So, if the topic covers material that you are completely unfamiliar with, dont panic. All the information you need will be presented in the passage.
Passages will vary in length and difficulty. Some passages will be as short as one or two sentences. Other short passages will consist of about 100 words. The long passages you will see will consist of approximately 200 words. In general, longer passages will be accompanied by more multiple-choice questions. The number of questions based on each passage will vary greatly. Some passages will only have one question, while other passages could have up to five questions.
In this chapter, we will cover general strategies that you should apply to all questions presented in the Reading Section. will provide you with specific strategies for handling the types of questions you might be asked. First, lets dissect the types of questions that may be asked on the CBEST Reading Section.
