Much of the material referred to in this book has been drawn from The Chicago Manual of Style, The Christian Writers Manual of Style, and The Associated Press Stylebook . Cross-references to CMOS, CWMS, and AP are provided for your convenience. Be sure to consult these reference books (or their online versions) for a more comprehensive treatment of the topics covered here. ENDORSEMENTS Polishing the PUGS: Punctuation, Usage, Grammar, and Spelling Tips for Writers contained a lot of the material that is now in sections 25 of this book. Heres what some people said about that publication. Dont buy a copy of Kathy Ides PUGS book! Thats right.
Dont buy a copy. Buy two copies: one for yourself and one for someone youd like to help. Grammar/punctuation books abound by the hundreds. Kathys offers a service thats invaluable. She cites The Chicago Manual of Style . Every time Kathy gives a rule or principle, she cites the CMOS reference.
I wonder how many people realize what an invaluable service shes offering. I have two popular style books on my desk. Both of them make statements without backing them up. I prefer to have the backing of CMOS on every bit of editing I do. Please take my advice: Buy at least two copies . Someone else will be glad you did.
Cecil Murphey, author and coauthor of more than 130 books (at last count) I cannot possibly recommend Kathys book strongly enough! I hazard to guess that 95 percent of the questions one has about punctuation, usage, grammar, and spelling are covered here. Its so easy to grab the book from the side of my computer, find what Im looking for in the Table of Contents, and have an answer to my questionin seconds . Amber Ferguson, freelance author and editor Kathy Ides book is a result of her knowledge of the subject and thorough research. Her love for the language and for writing is evident. This resource will be a favorite for writers, editors, teachers, and everyone else who enjoys words. Pam Pugh, Moody Publishers Kathy Ides book is a fantastic resource for writerssort of a best of everything: The Chicago Manual of Style, Strunks Elements of Style, and other standard manuals on writing, all compiled into one easy reference spot.
It is concise, well researched, and conveniently organized, and I refer to it often. My favorite feature is the blank space at the end of each section for you to make notes about your own pet PUGS peeves. Ive already added several spelling words to the blank space in the commonly misspelled words section. With this book, everything is at your fingertips in a well-organized fashion. I predict Ill wear out my copy within the year. Deborah Raney, award-winning novelist This book is an essential tool for writers and editors.
Ive read it from cover to cover and still refer to it often. Its a concise guide to great grammar, using The Chicago Manual of Style as its basis. I wouldnt be without it. Linda Harris, freelance writer and editor Kathy Ides book is a practical, concise, and extremely user-friendly reference guide that has made my life easier as both a writer and editor. Not only has it been an invaluable tool in my personal life, but as a mentor to new writers and teacher at writers conferences, I recommend it to everyone as a must-have . This book was the first reference book I purchased as a writer/editor and I simply could not live without it.
Andrea Merrell, freelance writer and editor Ive been writing for many years, and Ive learned a lot through my writing and critique groups that I didnt pick up in my English classes. But with this book, Kathy has put together information that Im going to treasure with my Strunk and White. Gloria Clover, freelance author and editor I have been writing, editing, and proofreading professionally since 1976. Kathy Ides wonderful book is worth so very much. She has addressed issues that I have not seen covered elsewhere, and I am extremely familiar with many style/grammar books. Her examples and explanations are some of the best I have encountered.
I cannot recommend it enough. Marilyn A. Anderson, freelance editor and writer Kathy Ides book was helpful when I first began freelance editing seven years ago. Her straightforward, no-nonsense way of putting it together helped me find what I needed, without fuss or aggravation. Since I edit for newsletters as well as book authors, I was particularly glad to see Kathy included both The Associated Press Stylebook and The Chicago Manual of Style when providing punctuation, usage, grammar, and spelling information. Nanette Thorsen-Snipes, freelance editor and writer Kathys thoughtful book provides welcome relief for writers and editors who seek a quick reference guide to the most common points of confusion regarding punctuation, usage, grammar, and spelling.
Kathys writing style is fresh and engaging, not an easy tone to project in a reference book. While I own the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style , I turn first to Kathys book. Its faster and easier to manage, and almost always answers my question. Sheila Seiler Lagrand, blogger, author, editor ACKNOWL EDGM ENTS Id like to thank my editing clientsaspiring writers, established authors, traditional publishing houses, subsidy publishers, and magazinesfor inspiring me to strive for excellence and to research the appropriate rules in the industry-standard reference books. I also deeply appreciate my family members who patiently put up with my quirks and idiosyncrasieslike refusing to follow a truck that had an advertisement with its on it and complaining that big national companies ought to hire ad agencies that know when everyday should be spelled as two words and praising the local grocery store for having express-lane signs that say, Ten Items or Fewer . Thanks also to my writing colleagues, who have peppered me with questions about punctuation, usage, grammar, and spelling (which I came to call PUGS), then raved about how much I knew on these subjects (apparently not realizing that I merely knew where to look up the right answers), and affectionately dubbed me the PUGS lady.
