So, what is it? why should you make one? What can you do with it? All of these questions are common when youre initially beginning in the art of composting. Luckily this chapter will answer many of the questions that you have, and how you can make this type of compost to work for yourself.
So, what is it? well, a compost in essence is a receptacle that you typically have in your backyard that contains scraps of food, various remains grass clippings and the like. This does break down and it creates a valuable set of nutrients for the garden itself.
Youll notice that this, when put into the garden, creates a richer soil that is productive. When you plant plants in the soil, it tends to eke away at your nutrients which can affect the growth of soil. Composting is done every single growing season, and when its added, since its got a ton of nutrients in it, it will help to push the microbes within this soil in order for it to grow.
At the basic of it all, compost is organic matter that is decomposed. Composting is super natural, and it recycles everything such as leaves, and scraps and it creates a super rich soil.
Now, compost is super helpful because in the soil food web, youve got bacteria and other microscopic organisms. But its not just that, we also have worms and fungi, which are actually symbiotic in terms of their relationship with the plants. This partnership allows the veggies to eat these nutrients and sustain themselves. Composts in essence allows for veggies to grow stronger, and it actually can help with also helping them stay away from diseases, and its helping with nutrition and can even affect the flavors as well.
It also helps the soil keep moisture so that you dont have to worry about watering it so much. It also reduces the trash in your home, and it can be a valuable part of keeping the earth clean and doing your part.
Now there are a lot of composting items that you can throw in there. It is great to use if youve got wasted food in the fridge such as maybe some veggies that went bad. This eliminates personal waste on your end, but it also helps too if youre looking to ensure that you have a better more remunerative home and youre happier with the way things are.
The best thing to do, is that whenever you have a foods and such that are done you simply keep a container nearby including a small bucket to accumulate this. You can then start to put various items in there.
Now commonly the two most common things you see in this are vegetable and fruit scraps. But if youve got some old coffee grounds and eggshells, these are perfect for this.
If you do any lawn work and you have old plant clippings and grass clippings throw it in there. Leaves from old plants that have dried out or maybe even trees work so well in this as well.
If youre someone that does some woodwork usually some chopped wood and some chips from the bark are perfect for this too. Sawdust from wood thats not treated is also perfect too but remember that everything is natural.
You can throw newspaper in there as well, provided that its shredded up.
