In memory of my grandparents, Hobert and Ruth Alexander, the farmers I didnt get the chance to know.
I have to wonder if theyre smiling from heaven, watching their granddaughter tend her own plot of land.

Jill, would you go out to the garden and get me a green pepper? Okaaaay... I replied. What does it look like?
I dont recall this exchange, but my mom was quick to bring it up when I announced, as a 32-year-old, my new gardening venture.
I had just quit my job as Business Development Manager of a Ford dealership in order to stay home with my children, then aged six and two. To help ease the reduction of our household income, I figured growing some of our food would contribute in a different yet tangible way.
The problem? I had absolutely no idea how to get started or what to do. But I was determined, and I dove into every gardening resource I could find. I spent months combing through information. I kept a meticulous notebook on soil, crops, garden layouts, pests, and diseases.
But even the most basic gardening informationthe kind that assumed absolutely no gardening knowledgewas still slightly beyond my reach. I ended up learning the way many gardeners do: by diving in and adjusting as I went.
My first garden yielded enough to hook me. As the years passed and I gained more knowledge and experience, I realized I wanted to share this passion with others, specifically, others with no prior knowledge of vegetable gardening. In January 2017 I launched the Beginners Garden Podcast and began writing regular how-to articles on my blog, all for the beginning gardener I used to be.
While Im grateful for the gardening books that got me started, what you hold in your hands is the book I wish Id had.
In , Ill teach you everything you need to know to get started with your own vegetable garden, beginning with some key decisions you need to make way before you purchase your first seeds. For example, what kind of garden do you want? Where will it go? How large? What tools do you need? What should you grow and when should you plant?
Then youll learn about building and filling your garden beds or containers, starting seeds indoors, and transplanting. Ill discuss options for watering, mulching, and vertical gardening. Then, youll learn how to harvest and store your bounty. Finally, Ill talk about what to do at the end of the growing season, because my hope is that this year is only the first of many wonderful gardening years for you.
Once you have the basics down, you can dive into , where youll learn about more than 30 common vegetables and herbs in the home garden and, of course, get the specifics on how to grow, harvest, and use them. I hope this section gets dog-eared and soil-stained from repeated use.
Are you ready to get started?
Welcome to the world of home vegetable gardening. Im delighted to share this journey with you. If youre anything like I was before I began my first garden, you may be feeling both nervous and excited.
Let me put your mind at ease. Trepidation is completely normal. But you can do this! Im here to show you how and teach you what you need to know for success. With the help of this book, youll work toward creating the vegetable garden of your dreams.
The first step is to learn the basics; no need to worry about advanced techniques. The second is to create a thought-out plan. With your plan, youll be able to continue with confidence.
In this part of the book, Ill teach you the basics and help you make a plan. From choosing your gardens location to harvesting your vegetables, this section will provide you with the tools and knowledge you need. Are you ready to dig in?
A successful vegetable garden begins with a solid understanding of basic - photo 4
A successful vegetable garden begins with a solid understanding of basic gardening principles. You need to understand the why and the what before diving into the how. Before you browse seed catalogs or pick up a shovel or even skip to the vegetable profiles, tempting as that might be, read this chapter carefully. This foundation will give you the knowledge to begin your vegetable gardening journey.
Why Grow Your Own Vegetables?
Backyard gardeners grow vegetables for many different reasons. Although I started with the goal of saving money, many gardeners begin for the simple joy a garden provides.
