MY STORY

In my twenties, I was completely addicted to sugar. Im sure it didnt help that I was working at an advertising agency and my main client was a candy company. You can just imagine the number of freebies I received. Most of the time, I had hundreds of bags of chocolate-covered almonds and peanuts under my desk. Some might think this was heaven, but it was hell when I was trying my best not to indulgenot to become a downright ferocious sugar monster!

When I decided it was time to kick my sugar habit, I experimented with numerous cleanses and detoxes. Colon cleanses, juice fasts, raw food cleanses, liver detoxesyou name it, I have probably tried it. I kept trying things out well into the time I attended nutrition school. I thought, How can I possibly recommend these cleanses and detoxes if I havent tried them myself? By experiencing so many different detoxes and cleanses myself, Ive hopefully saved you from going down the same pathwhich more often than not was the path to the washroom!

That wasnt the only downside. More often than not, after just a few days I had little or no energy. Thats not to say that none of these cleanses and detoxes had benefits, because some of them did. I just found it really difficult at times to stick with the prescribed programs, especially when the thought of downing another slimy green concoction would give me the dry heaves!

I started to realize that all those trendyand sometimes severely restrictiveprograms offered no benefit once I went back to my old ways of eating. And I had no choice but to go back to these old ways of eating because most cleanses were simply not sustainable for health and well-being, not to mention for giving me the energy to walk up a flight of stairs. And they certainly werent reasonable if I wanted to maintain any sort of social life.

It was through my own experiences, my education and the journey that ultimately led me to become a certified nutritionist that I found my own effective detox, which I called the Joyous Detox.

Before settling on Joyous Detox as the title of this book, I was really drawn to Everyday Detox. Let me tell you why. After trying to manage my diet by eating those 250-calorie frozen lunches and dinners in an effort to balance out my mid-afternoon candy fixes, I realized that the only way to kick my sweet tooth was to actually eat real food every day. What a concepta healthy, whole, balanced diet that also included some natural sweeteners! The funny thing was, to most of my friends, this whole-food diet I was embarking on made it seem like I was living on a perpetual detox. Yet I was feeling better than I had ever felt, and certainly better than I had ever felt doing those hard-core detoxes or cleanses. I had no more sugar cravings or energy crashes, my chronically bloated belly had deflated, and I looked and felt joyous. Everyone kept asking me what I was doing because I was glowing!

Some might call this book a detox book, but when you really delve into it, youll find that its an everyday eating and living guide to feeling joyous on the inside and glowing on the outside. I realized, though, that Everyday Detox was not a very snappy title, nor would most people have any clue what it meant, so I called my book
