Food. Love. Love.
When it comes to nourishing our children, giving love through quality, delicious food is the goal, and there is evidence to support this theory. One could offer statistics, for instance, about how organic whole foods contain more nutrients and fewer toxins than conventional foods, thus helping a childs body grow more efficiently and powerfully. Or one could point to how variety in tastes, smells, textures, and colors help children develop more robust senses. Additionally, one could highlight the importance of family interaction around food and the dining experience from babys earliest days. There isnt a mom out there who doesnt want to do these things for her childand herself. Yet there are the issuesthe implementation challengesthat so often make what one knows and wants seem more difficult.
Families feel stuck and challenged and end up using shortcuts that they might not truly want to. In walks Anni Daulter, with love, compassion, and years of knowledge and practical solutions. Everyone wants to eat fresh delicious foods, even your baby, which is why putting in the time to prepare homemade baby food is a gift you give your child that will last a lifetime. Passing along family cooking, eating, and eco-friendly traditions are priceless and go a long way in supporting a healthy lifestyle. I want this book to be a trusted resource for you to turn to when feeding your whole family foods that you feel good about. I know how personal feeding your baby is to you and how worried parents get when their baby doesnt eat something they should or does eat something they shouldnt. I want to try to help ease some of your concern with tips and ideas and simple recipes to help you give your baby a fresh, healthy start. I believe food traditions come from an understanding and appreciation of where our food comes from and how its grown and processed.
When parents possess this basic knowledge, they can find ways to pass along important information to their children as they start solid foods and continue down the path of choosing foods for themselves one day. After all, we parents do all of this work so our babies and children will grow into healthy beings that hopefully make sound nutritional choices for themselves, and to do that, they need the tools. Babies eat what we give them, kids eat what they are used to, and adults eat what they like. As parents, we can help shape this trajectory in ways that support healthy bodies and a healthy environment.
Bountiful Baby Pures is a book that invites you to cook seasonally for your baby by using local, fresh, and organic ingredients. But in the spirit of bounty, I wanted to give you even more.
As a conscious-minded mama, I wanted to write a cookbook that would give you those fresh ideas for cooking for your baby but also offer you tips on how to incorporate those wonderful pures and baby foods into your family meals. For those of you with multiple children, like me, this book is a goldmine full of goodies. What I have found is that when you make a bunch of food for your baby, so much of it can go to waste because she often cannot (or doesnt care to) eat it all. Being able to utilize your pures in your family meals will save you time, effort, and money, and it is a great way to incorporate healthy additions to your meals, saving those precious leftover baby pures! I like my cookbooks to somehow cross the age barriers and be suitable for all family members, as I truly believe that everyone, including babies, should be able to take part in the family food table. So explore, exchange, and share these 2-in-one recipes, while supporting your new baby and growing family throughout all the seasons of your life. With gratitude, Feeding a brand new baby can seem intimidating, but remember that babies are just little people, and these first bites are just thatlittle bites.
It is important to keep this in mind because all babies are different, and some start earlier than others when it comes to eating solid foods. Boys tend to start eating solid foods earlier and want more than girls, but this is not always the case, of course. Because babies are human beings, there are no set rules we can adhere to for every child. We must listen to them, follow their cues, and trust the process. If you are feeling anxious about food, so will your baby. Likewise, if you are relaxed and excited about food, your child is likely to follow your cues.
Babies tend to be ready for these first tastes of food around six months old, when they are sitting up on their own, and showing interest. Please do not start your baby eating solids before six months old. They do not need it, and their digestive tracts are not formed well enough to process it. When the magical day finally comes, offer your baby solid food taste tests, offer small bites at a time, and never force your baby to eat. Babies have a natural gag reflex, and when they are starting to try foods, they may use that from time to time. This does not usually mean they are choking, so try not to panic.
