lynn frederickss experience
I invited my children to cook our meals with me when I was a newly divorced mother of two young boysone a toddler. Bonding around the creative activity of cooking helped my sons and me heal from the divorce. Over the years, my family life improved dramatically as we shared quality time together, making recipes from around the world.
By the time my younger son, Stephan, was seven, seafood risotto had become his specialty. His adolescent brother developed into an amazing sous chef. Laughter and smiles filled our kitchen, and the pressure of single parenthood eased a bit each evening as we prepared and shared a delicious, healthy meal together. Now in their twenties and living independently, my children cook for themselvesStephan even makes his own bread.
I learned so much about cooking with children that I wanted to share this wisdom with other families. I shifted from being a food writer for magazines and newspapers to being an educator. I took the secrets Id learned from chefs of various cuisinesAmerican, French, Italian, and Asian in particularand pared them down to the essentials, so I could teach parents how to cook with their children at home. In 1995, I founded what would become FamilyCook Productions and later wrote my first book Cooking Time Is Family Time.
We now work with partners from New York to Brazil, employing our field-tested, evidence-based strategies and our specific philosophy. We show people how to make healthier choices, first and foremost by inspiring enjoyment. HealthCorps, founded by surgeon and health expert Dr. Oz, licensed our Teen Battle Chef program to schools across the United States. The American Heart Association and Dole/Tropicana juices support our preschool program, Nibble 1, 2, 3 with Willow. Together, we are successfully moving parents and children toward a healthier relationship with food.
mercedes sanchezs experience
For me, food offered a way to connect my children with their Spanish origins. The birth of my first child prompted me to reflect on who I was, so I could explain our heritage to my daughter, Sofia. Although Id left Spain in my twenties to settle in the United States, it was not until I became a new mother that I began to feel like the immigrant I was.
In a country where few people knew much about Spain, I searched for foods and recipes from my homeland. With each Spanish meal I served, I regaled Sofia with the stories behind every recipe. In this way, I connected my daughter with my Spanish family and origins.
My French-American husband also began to search for his roots and voil, a new pride for French cuisine emerged. Surprisingly, our newfound interest in our different heritages created an obstacle. We debated which was better, manchego cheese or brie? Spanish jamn or foie gras? One of our biggest battles centered on whether to fry an egg with olive oil or butter. Would eggs become grounds for divorce?
Despite such challenges, I persevered and insisted that my children literally consume their Spanish and French heritages. Thanks to my work with Lynn, we happily adopted the culinary diversity of America into our family diet.
After I became a registered dietician, I also focused on the nutritional value of our meals. I endeavored to serve mostly whole foods and struggled to limit unhealthy ones. My most successful tactics have been shared through FamilyCook Productions program for more than fifteen years. In this book, I am excited to share them with you.
how this book can help your family
Our philosophy has four essential objectives emphasized throughout this book:
1. Enjoy meals at the table together.
2. Eat meals cooked at home.
3. Cook with fresh ingredients.
4. Let everyone help.
Sound easy? Well, were not going to lie to youit will take some effort. But we do have lots of tricks up our sleeves to share with you to make it fun and, above all, easier. Well show you how to feed your family delicious, simple, healthy meals and save money, too.
Eating Healthy Meals Can Be a Pleasurable Experience
Eating is a social act, and children learn to eat healthy foods through sharing home-cooked meals with family and friends. In this way, children associate real food first with a pleasurable experience and, by default, learn that its good for them.
