Words & Music by Bob Dylan
Even though this song appeared on Dylans 1967 album, John Wesley Harding, he didnt include it in a live set
until 1974, in Chicago. Lifelong fan and prolific guitarist, Jimi Hendrix, fell completely in love with the track,
having heard it before it was even released, and decided to record it. Dylan loved Hendrixs take on it, saying,
I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day.
Hints & Tips: The opening riff sets the beat and feel of this tune, so keep those syncopations crisp in order to drive the
song forward. Dont be put off if the rhythms look complicated in both hands theyre often playing together.

Dylan first performed this track in New York in 1962, but it was when folk trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, released
their version of the song in 1963 that the songwriter really started to gain recognition. Blowin In The Wind
has since been covered by artists from Johnny Cash to Stevie Wonder and was inducted into the prestigious
Grammy Hall of Fame in 1994.
Hints & Tips: Once youve mastered the notes, experiment with the rhythms in the right-hand melody line instead of playing
the basic written note values, which can sound mechanical. Try to maintain a gentle dynamic, never playing louder than mf .

Dylan wrote this song when his girlfriend at the time, Suze Rotolo, left him in New York to study in Italy,
though the lyrics are written to reflect how the separation might have gone if Dylan had left Rotolo. In what
could be a case of nostalgia on Dylans part, the two are pictured on the front of The Freewheelin Bob Dylan,
the album on which this song features.
Hints & Tips: There is a lot of syncopation in the right hand: clap out the rhythms before trying to play them. When you
come to play both hands together, concentrate on keeping the beat steady with the bouncy crotchets in the left hand.

Dylan recorded two versions of this song for his 1974 album, Planet Waves a slow rendition and a more up
tempo adaptation. By this time, Dylan was father to four children and he wrote the lyrics from the
perspective of a parent talking to their child. Illustrator and graphic designer, Paul Rogers, picked up the
track and made Forever Young into an illustrated childrens book in 2008.
Hints & Tips: Watch out for the sneaky 2/4 bar at the end of the first page! Make the most of the dynamic variation
between the verse and chorus. As an exercise, try more exaggerated dynamics, like pp for the
verse and ff for the chorus, or add a crescendo at bar 16.

11 verses long, this song tells the story of Rubin Hurricane Carter, who was imprisoned for 19 years for
the murder of three people. Dylan went to visit him in 1975, while he was incarcerated, and felt compelled to
write this song after becoming convinced of the boxers innocence. Dylan used his profile to raise money
for Hurricanes release, which eventually came in 1984, nine years after their meeting.
Hints & Tips: Practise the walking bassline on its own before pairing it with the right hand. Make sure the double notes
in the right hand are played precisely at the same time.

Words & Music by Bob Dylan
Around the time of his fourth studio album, Another Side of Bob Dylan (released in 1964), Dylan tried to
publish a book of poetry. Sadly, it didnt take, but the experience had an impact on his songwriting, as is
evident in the lyrical pattern of It Aint Me, Babe. As it happened, in 2016, Dylan became the first musician to
receive the Nobel Prize for Literature for having created new poetic expressions within the great American
song tradition. Patience paid off!
Hints & Tips: Read through the structure of this song before you start to play. Youll need to find the segno symbol,
so you know where to go back to when you reach the D.S. al Coda, as well as the To Coda instruction, so you know
when to skip to the Coda at the very end.

This song was written for the 1973 film, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. Hard rock band Guns N Roses produced
arguably the most famous cover version, which was used for the 1990 Tom Cruise film, Days of Thunder, and
appears on their 1991 album, Use Your Illusion II. More recently, in a very rare instance, Dylan permitted an
additional verse to be written for the song when musician, Ted Christopher, wanted to record it in memory of
the victims of the Dunblane Massacre of 1996
Hints & Tips: Acknowledge the mf dynamic marking in bar 17 for the chorus, and remember to bring the volume
down again when you go back into the verse. Take a look at the metronome mark this is a slow song,
so be careful not to rush through it.

Dylan narrowly missed out on this track featuring as the theme tune for the 1969 film, Midnight Cowboy, when
Nilsson nabbed the title with his song, Everybodys Talkin. Nonetheless, Lay, Lady, Lay made its way
and went on to be covered by a number of artists, including The Byrds, The Isley
Brothers and Duran Duran.
Hints & Tips: Pay attention to the chromatic steps in both hands and remember that accidentals apply to the whole
bar unless cancelled. From bar 5, be conscious of the note values in the left hand make sure the top notes are held
for a crotchet beat only.

Like A Rolling Stone was one of the songs that saw Dylan shift onto the folk-rock scene, with Al Kooper
recording the famous organ riff that drives the track. The song was inspired in part by the phrase a rolling
stone gathers no moss and it was fittingly covered by The Rolling Stones for their 1995 Stripped album. The
theme continued when Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it as their #1 Greatest Song of All Time in 2004.
