Preface by Sepp Holzer
Our thinking is far too short term! This is the grave conclusion I keep coming to after receiving feedback about my books, presentations and workshops. Nowadays most people want immediate solutions and recipes to existing problems. They do not think beyond today and tomorrow; they neglect to tune in to nature; they neglect to tie past, present and future together. They want everything now, ready to use, prepared by someone else.
To me, this is not a life worth living. To be human is to think independently, and to be independent in our perceptions and thought processes. Making mistakes is part of life. One of the biggest mistakes is the fear of making mistakes, because then we stop learning.
This book is not a recipe book even though it offers practical advice. I will deal with details, but I will not spoon-feed you. Desert or Paradise is aimed at a broad audience, but also specialists and experts. I want to show and demonstrate ways of perceiving nature, of co-operating with nature, and ways of natural thinking. I want to show how many possibilities there are to heal the earth, to live differently, more holistically. This book is aimed at everyone: from gardeners to legislators.
This book takes the reader by the hand for part of the way, but also shows how to walk on independently.
I hope to inspire the reader to think independently, to understand the causes and reasons for given situations and to realise the consequences of our actions.
When we consider ecological interactions in nature everything starts to make sense. Our lives can then become quests. Nature becomes our teacher but we have to tune in and make contact with nature for that to happen. We have to develop an intimacy with nature in order to experience and share her. This way we become part of nature, acting holistically and harmoniously, thereby decreasing our workload and our need for instant gratification.
Part of my work worldwide is to counsel individuals, ethnic groups, companies and organisations of different nationalities. I respect various religions, philosophies or political attitudes, but I stay independent. I aspire to help and respect all sentient beings and nature as a whole with my work.
Acknowledgement
The originally planned book on natural water management has turned into an extensive work. No wonder, water is a connecting element and engaging with it automatically leads to everything connected to it: soil and the life in and above it, forest life and biodiversity, food within its social and climatic context, humane animal husbandry and a self-dependent economy.
To learn from Sepp Holzer and to put his knowledge into writing has been a captivating task. He has a wide experience, intuitive and highly practical knowledge, and he has courage and is always ready to rebel. This makes for a truly revolutionary body of thought. What can resist globalisation and worldwide destruction of the environment better than showing alternatives? What is more revolutionary than the knowledge of healthy water management? Viktor Schauberger said, Capitalism rests on keeping the knowledge about water secret. He knew that once we have fresh water in abundance, food production becomes so cheap that speculating with it is rendered useless. I have discovered this in Sepp Holzers vision and have seen it realised in many ways.
By restoring the hydrological balance we can rekindle paradise all over the world. We can grow fruit and vegetables in all climates, along house walls, up old telegraph masts and along the edges and in empty spaces. We can create edible landscapes, live in harmony and co-operate with the animals. This forms the basis of the knowledge for the ecological renewal of the earth.
May we succeed!

Who is Sepp Holzer?
Sepp Holzer was born into a family of mountain farmers in 1942 in Austria. From early on he experienced natural cycles with the open curiosity of a child. Through watching his self-built habitats, their animals, plant life and water, he found more coherent answers to his questions than school could provide. This paradise, created by him on a small scale, with all the symbiotic relationships the interplay of species and biodiversity has shaped his respect for nature and ways of co-operating with her.
As a child, Sepp Holzer was a true scientist: he did not believe blindly, and he would search and research until he found satisfying answers. Often his findings would contradict what his parents and teachers had to say. When young, he made a radical decision then and has stayed true to it to this day; he decided to make it his life-task to restore an ecological paradise on earth by fully co-operating with nature, consciously.
Conflicts were unavoidable. Nature and our man-made world have grown apart in all areas: politics, agriculture, social life and science. In order to stay true to himself and his integrity Sepp Holzer became the Rebel Farmer. All who know Sepp Holzer experience his authentic sympathy for anything living. He is unable to tolerate social injustice, cruelty to animals or destructive stupidity when working with nature. He is unable to ignore the worldwide destruction of nature he encounters wherever he goes, or the loss of humanity in our actions and humanitys global suffering from poverty and hunger. He is not afraid to support life and to name grievances. He does not avoid conflict, but he never makes accusations. Blessed with enormous energy, willpower and intelligence he always seeks alternatives to create win-win situations for humans and nature alike.
He often dreams these solutions. Whilst asleep his spirit is able to connect with the collective unconsciousness giving him access to an intuition deeper than his daytime intellect.

A lot of these discovered principles are so fundamental that they not only apply to growing healthy food, but are also applicable to many other areas of life.
