aquaculturethe rearing of aquatic plants and animals in natural or controlled marine or freshwater environments for human consumption
aquifera body of rock that contains or transmits water underground
biodiversitythe variety of species found in a particular ecosystem
bioprospectora person who searches for plant and animal species from which medicinal and other commercially valuable compounds can be obtained
carbon dioxide (CO)a gas produced when people and animals breathe out or when certain fuels are burned and that is used by plants for energy
carbon footprintthe amount of CO2 a person produces
carbon sinkanything that is able to absorb CO2 and keep it out of the atmosphere, such as trees, the ocean and soil
citizen sciencethe collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the general public, typically as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists
climatethe average weather conditions of a place, usually measured over one year
climate changea change in global or regional climate patterns, attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels
dead zonesan area in a lake or ocean where the oxygen levels are too low to support animal life, often caused by human pollution
ecologista person who studies the relationships between living things and their environment
