Introduction An Invitation
So much to learn, so little time. The demands of school, jobs, family, and community can seem overwhelming at times. Every day there are exciting things going on and new ideas taking shape that will change the way you look at who you are and what you do. You experience many of these events and ideas through sightwhat you read in newspapers, magazines, and books, on signs, and even on the computer screen. Others you discover through soundon radio or TV, in films and conversations. To be able to share in and be part of this incredible process of communication, you have to have access to its common currencythe language that expresses the ideas, gives the instructions, and reports the events that unite us as a society.
