EUGENE FODOR
Hungarian-born Eugene Fodor (190591) began his travel career as an interpreter on a French cruise ship. The experience inspired him to write On the Continent (1936), the first guidebook to receive annual updates and discuss a countrys way of life as well as its sights. Fodor later joined the U.S. Army and worked for the OSS in World War II. After the war, he kept up his intelligence work while expanding his guidebook series. During the Cold War, many guides were written by fellow agents who understood the value of insider information. Todays guides continue Fodors legacy by providing travelers with timely coverage, insider tips, and cultural context.
WELCOME TO AMSTERDAM
The compact capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam charms with its Golden Age legacy of distinctive canal rings, gabled houses, and atmospheric parks. Museums here display treasures by Dutch painters from Rembrandt to Vermeer and Van Gogh, and capture the past at sites like the Anne Frankhuis. But its not all about history: Amsterdams tolerant modern outlook embraces pot smoking and prostitution, as well as cosmopolitan shopping and hip nightlife. To explore this lovely, accessible city, take a canal boat or ride a bike through the leafy neighborhoods.
TOP REASONS TO GO
Architecture: Tall canal houses, baroque church spires, and scenic courtyards.
Biking: A truly local experiencea ride in the Plantage neighborhood or Vondelpark.
Museums: Art at the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum; moving history at Anne Frankhuis.
Food: From savory Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table) to Dutch pancakes and herring.
Beer: Heineken is the big name, but artisanal brews and foaming lagers tempt, too.
Vices: Though tamer now, the Red Light District and cannabis coffeeshops still draw crowds.
