Acknowledgements
Our first experiences of food are learnt at the table with our families, so I would like to thank my mum and dad, Joan and Harry, for the real food dinner eaten every night, at the table. Also my brother, Neil Patience, a secret foodie and inspiration. My children, Ben, James and Tim, for being willing victims of my culinary experiments (and thanks to Tim for being chief taster). My aunt, Linda Trigg, an amazing home cook, who gave recipe ideas and suggestions. I could not have written the book at all without the support of my husband, Simon Payne. I love you all thank you. Finally, thank you to the parents and babies who contributed through testing recipes and allowing me to share their experiences with you.
Introduction
One of the most important factors influencing a childs health, growth and development is food, and every parent worries about it. To make matters worse, weaning has become more complicated than ever before, with confusing advice and competing weaning ideologies. The government says one thing, someone else says another; some people are into baby-led weaning, some swear by pures.
As a health visitor, registered nutritionist and nurse, with nearly two decades of working directly with families, I understand more than anyone the concerns and difficulties parents face when it comes to weaning and feeding. I engage with families every week working through their concerns and have a thorough understanding of the challenges modern parents face when it comes to weaning. I also have three boys of my own, two of whom have reached university age with the ability to cook and at least know what is healthy, even if they dont always eat it. Ive definitely had personal experience of weaning and beyond!
How to Use This Book
This book explains the process of weaning, as well as how to prevent and deal with common problems such as fussy eating. You can read it either prior to starting weaning or during weaning to help you progress or get over sticking points. The book provides explanations of food groups and how they contribute to a healthy diet, allowing you to plan nutritious meals for your child and the whole family. It also provides a selection of popular family recipes in the back of the book, which will be easily accessible when you have finished reading the how to parts.
Please note: I have used (R) next to some meals and dishes in the main text. This is to indicate that the recipe for this is included at the back of the book.
What is meant by weaning?
In this book, as is common in the UK, the word weaning is used to mean the overall process of introducing solid foods into a babys diet. It is not used to imply the end of breast- or formula feeding.
This book will cut through the noise of contradictory advice and provide clear, impartial, evidence-based advice drawn from my work with thousands of families. I hear the same concerns and same sticking points from parents over and over again, and I aim to equip you with the information and evidence you need to avoid the common pitfalls and confidently wean and feed your child.
Weaning neednt be difficult, but, like everything worth doing well, thought and planning make the task a lot easier, and thats what I hope this book achieves for you easy weaning.
Chapter 1
When to Start Weaning
Over recent years debate has built up around the optimal age to start weaning: is it four months or six months, or somewhere in between? Parents are left to bounce back and forth according to opinions of interested groups, so I hope this chapter will help you cut through the ideologies and look at the facts we have.
The age of weaning has varied both historically and between different countries and cultures. The advice today, from the Department of Health in the UK and, indeed, other parts of the world, is based on the World Health Organizations recommendations: that it is best to exclusively breastfeed your baby for the first six months. The current UK advice is to introduce solids when your baby is developmentally ready, which for most babies is at six months (26 weeks) of age, with room for individual variation.
What is clear is that
