Studying for the Praxis: Where Do I Start?
Studying for the Praxis means taking a big step toward embarking on a new and meaningful career as a teacher. But figuring out how to most effectively study for the exam can be stressful. Our goal is to give you the tools and strategies you need to feel calm and confident on test day.
Youre not just getting the content in this bookas part of the Praxis package, you also have access to a wealth of practice and information through your online resources, including full-length computer-based tests that simulate the real online test environment. If you received this book as a component of Kaplans Praxis Deluxe course, you also have video instruction and additional sets of practice questions in your online Study Plan.
These materials are customizable to your individual needs. You dont have to work through the book in the order it is written. If you are studying for any of the Praxis Core exams or for Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching tests, you can start with an online pre-test to assess your strengths and weaknesses. Review your results: Which questions did you answer correctly? Is there a pattern to the ones you missed? In which content area or question style do you have the biggest opportunity to improve? Then dive into the chapters covering those tests, tackling your weakest areas first and working toward the areas of your biggest strengths.
Taking into account the information you learn from your pre-test, use the advice and study aids discussed below to make the most of your practice time.

Time-Tested Strategies for Every Question Type
Kaplan has spent decades researching the Praxis and teaching thousands of students the effective methods they need to succeed. This book contains detailed instruction on how to analyze and correctly answer the various question types you will encounter on the specific Praxis test for which you are studying.
Pre-Tests For Chapters 14
Your online Study Plan also includes short pre-tests for the three Praxis Core exams (Reading, Mathematics, and Writing) and for the Praxis PLT tests. We recommend that you take these before you start working through the Kaplan Methods and strategies for the tests covered in these chapters. The pre-tests are accompanied by full explanations for each problem, and they break down your performance by content area to help you identify your strengths and opportunities. Having this information will let you work in an efficient and focused way.
Practice Sets
Every chapter of this book contains sets of practice questions with the same format as questions youll see on the computer-based practice tests and official exams. The explanations for these questions are in the book, immediately following the practice set. The practice questions provide an opportunity to check your skills after reading the material in the chapter, but before assessing your overall performance with a full-length online exam.
Full-Length Practice Tests
As noted above, your online study plan contains full-length computer-based practice tests for eight Praxis exams. These computer-based practice tests are designed to replicate the official test day experience as closely as possible. You should treat these as if you were sitting for the actual exam: clear off your work space, turn off your cell phone, and remove any other distractions. The practice tests are timed in the same manner as the official tests, so make sure you have enough uninterrupted time to complete the test before you begin.
After you complete the test, youll find complete answers and explanations for each question online. Moreover, youll see an analysis of your strengths and weaknesses broken down by question type and content area in Kaplans exclusive Smart Reports test analysis and reporting tool. Use this feedback to prioritize any area that needs significant improvement, and return early and often to study the relevant portions of this book.
Theres a Lot of Material to Review. How Will I Remember Everything Ill Need to Ace the Test?
In addition to providing you with the best practice questions and test strategies, Kaplans team of learning scientists is dedicated to researching and testing the best methods for getting the most out of your study time. Here are our top five tips for improving retention.
Start or End Each Study Session by Reviewing Practice Questions
Practice questions provide focus for each study session by showing what you still need to learn and by helping you draw connections between what you already know and what you will be studying. Studies show that students who test ahead of time score higher after studying than students who dont pre-test themselves. If your practice questions have explanations, be sure you take the time to read them carefully. Building familiarity with the structure of the questions and answers will help you feel more comfortable with the test itself.
