A lot of people are daunted by the idea of
designing their own garden. With so much
overwhelming information out there, it
can seem a real challenge. However, in
reality, garden design isnt that dierent
from any other sort of design.
Think of it this way. Most of us can
get our heads around turning our house
into a home, choosing colors, buying
furniture, and arranging it all so it
meets our practical needs and feels
comfortable, and garden design is not
that dierent.
For me, a well-designed garden is
essentially about four things: space,
people, plants, and a sense of place.
The rst step to great garden design
involves understanding the space you
are working with. By that, I mean the size,
the soil, the climate, and the landscape.
Second, you need to understand that,
above all else, gardens are about people,
and the key to creating one that works
well is to focus on what you want and
need from it. Like your home, your
garden should reect your personality.
Third, think about plants. Many people
have a big fear factor around plants,
what with the Latin names and the idea
that if something doesnt get pruned on
the last Wednesday in March, the whole
world will come to an end. In reality,
learning about plants can be a journey
that takes a lifetime, and you really dont
need to know a lot to start.
Finally, if you can make some sort of
connection to the area where you live,
whether by growing particular plants or
using local materials, then youll end up
with a stronger sense of place. Memories
are a very important part of my design
processnot just looking back on them
but also looking at how we can create
them for ourselves.
The garden should be a comfortable,
usable space that reects your needs
and taste. Looking down from above, in
its simplest form, a garden layout is just a
I love the way gardens help us connect to nature, the
seasons, and the wider landscape. Whether youve got
a tiny city oasis or an acre in the country, a well-thought-out
garden is good for mind, body, and soul.
