CONTENTS AT A GLANCE

PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION

The fourth edition of the Civil Engineering PE All-in-One Exam Guide comes out approximately 5 years after the July 2015 release of the third edition. This new edition appears in concert with the latest updates of codes and standards for the April 2020 exam. The fourth edition has been updated for the codes referenced in the NCEES syllabus effective April 2020, including the following:

Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), 6th edition, 2016

A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (AASHTO Green Book), 7th edition, 2018

Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 2009

Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE 7), 2010

AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, 2nd edition, 2015

Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318), 2014

Building Code Requirements and Specifications for Masonry Structures (TMS 402/602), 2013

AISC Manual of Steel Construction, 14th edition, 2011

AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 7th edition, 2014

PCI Design HandbookPrecast and Prestressed Concrete, 7th edition, 2010

In the fourth edition, approximately 40 pages of new material have been added, including solved examples. In addition, any errors in the third edition have been corrected.

If you are reading this preface and want a cookbook that will evoke some kind of magic at exam time and give you exactly the answer to a particular exam question in a couple of neat sentences, then you should return the book at once. On the other hand, if you want to review and learn civil engineering fundamentals to the extent that you dont need a cookbook to pass the PE exam, then you should continue. I wont claim that the book explains each topic better than any other book, but I have tried my best to present the topics in a comprehensive and holistic way.

In addition to studying a book such as this one, it is imperative for readers to create a suite of references to support their exam preparation. In particular, those attempting the construction, structural, or transportation depth area of the PE Civil exam should become intimately familiar with most, if not all, of the design standards relevant to that depth area. Surely, the list of references (that this edition is current with) will be updated and it is up to individuals to make sure that they are using the most current of the standards referenced by NCEES.
