Saul uses a sharp wit in advocating for vitamins and attacking the medical and pharmaceutical professions.

Empowering. An enjoyable, practical and easy-to-read book. I highly recommend this book to everyone, including physicians who wish to provide a comprehensive natural-health care program.

JOHN I. MOSHER, PHD

Fantastic. Andrew Saul has made a great contribution.

RONALD HOFFMAN, M.D.

I had been a practicing pediatric gastroenterologist for 25 years. During that time I watched some really beautiful children and young men and women die under my care because I had nothing more to offer, and unfortunately what I had offered many times only made their lives more miserable. Recent health problems led me to read about Linus Pauling and orthomolecular medicine and it has been like discovering an advanced ancient civilization that I had no idea had ever existed. After reading Doctor Yourself by Dr. Andrew Saul, I have become a very angry man. Ive just realized that for 25 years I had been making my patients sick and big pharma rich. Ive just realized that those chronic hepatitis patients that died waiting for a liver transplant could have been easily cured with vitamin C. I realize now that my toximolecular medical education only led me to do more harm than good. That is not a good feeling to have. I only wish that all my critically ill patients had read Dr. Sauls book and fired their doctor. Doctor Yourself in fact has inspired me to now open an exclusive orthomolecular medicine practice for children and adults of all ages, and copies of the book will be in the waiting room for all to read. In the names of all those I didnt help before, I hope this time to make a difference.

EDWARD CICHOWICZ, MD, PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGIST

Doctor Yourself has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Hindi, and Chinese.

For Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael

Foreword

by Abram Hoffer, M.D.

I n 1952 when we first began to study the therapeutic properties of vitamin B3 for the treatment of schizophrenia, my colleagues and I did not think that we were blazing new trails. We merely used much larger amounts of this vitamin than were required to keep anyone free from pellagra. At that time, it was forbidden for medical doctors to have any professional interaction with alternative medicine professions such as homeopathy, chiropractic, and naturopathy. Even sharing an office with them could lead to the financial death of losing ones license to practice. So we happily carried on with our work, gathering more and more data showing how powerful niacin and niacinamide were in helping to treat the schizophrenias, among the worst of all human diseases.

We were rudely awakened when we began to publish our findings in the psychiatric literature. To my surprise, I discovered that our conclusions were not accepted with grace and interest. They were rejected with boredom, or hostility and anger. At the time I was both a professor of psychiatry and director of psychiatric research. But because of the vitamin research I was doing, I was in an awkward situation. I could not be politically loyal to the medical school and to the profession of psychiatry if I continued to advocate megadoses of niacin. I chose to give my loyalty to my patients.

Gradually, a few brave physicians, mostly American psychiatrists previously trained as analysts, began to use the treatment we had described and slowly we began to make some headway. The medical associations fought us tooth and nail every step of the way, but interest in our work continued to grow. We were far from the first to point out the importance of good food, but we were the first to show that very large megadoses of some vitamins were therapeutic when usual vitamin doses were not. (Actually, the first controlled experiment that showed the importance of good food was published in the Bible, in the first chapter of the Book of Daniel. It was an open study.)

Today, orthomolecular medicine is beginning to flourish. Orthomolecular means using a therapeutic substance that is natural to the human body, such as a vitamin or mineral. There has been a major paradigm shift away from the old school, which maintained that a few easy dietary rules as promoted by governments and medical associations would ensure everyones good health. Every year, more and more authors join the orthomolecular field, publishing good books that set the record straight about vitamins and put power into the hands of patients.
