Chapter One: Our Planets and Moons
According to NASA, an object has to (1) orbit a star, (2) be spherical, and (3) be the dominant body in its orbital neighborhood to be recognized what?
A planet. This definition was officially adopted in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union due to newly detected objects which fit the first two requirements but didnt feel like authentic planets.
How many planets are there in our Solar System?
Eight. Sorry, Pluto: in 2006, when the new definition of planet was adopted, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet because it was not the dominant body in its orbital neighborhood. There were objects of comparable size nearby.
What is the natural satellite of a planet called?
Most commonly referred to as a moon. A natural satellite means that it was not man-made and orbits another object such as a planet, minor planet, or other Solar System body. Any natural satellite of another object is a moon unless that other object is a star. In that case, the orbiting object is either a planet, a dwarf planet, or an asteroid.
Is it possible for something other than a planet to have a moon?
Yes! The dwarf planet Pluto has five of them. Its most prominent moon, Charon, almost acts to create a binary system between it and Pluto, though Pluto is the slightly dominant object. Even large asteroids can have moons of their own!
Although most often called just the Moon, what is the second-most-common name for Earths only natural satellite?
Luna. That is the Latin term for Earth's only natural satellite, and it's also where the word "lunar" comes from; it always refers to anything related to our Moon.
How do astronomers think the Moon originated?
The most popular idea is that a Mars-sized object collided with Earth about 4 billion years ago, and the material ejected from this impact became the Moon. The hypothetical objects name is Theia, the mother of Greek mythologys moon goddess.
In which country was the largest known meteor impact?
South Africa. The meteor in question caused the Vredefort crater, which is 186 miles across. For perspective, that is twice the size of the Chicxulub crater in the Yucatn Peninsula, created by the meteor that likely killed the dinosaurs!
Which two planets do not have any moons?
Mercury and Venus. As these are the two planets closest to the Sun, any celestial body too far away would be pulled into the Sun, but the planet's gravity would destroy anything close enough. There is no middle ground with these.
Name the largest moon in our Solar System?
Ganymede. The moon of Jupiter is so big that its about 8% larger than our tiniest planet, Mercury. Of course, the fact that Ganymede orbits a planet disqualifies it from being a planet itself.
Which gas giant has a moon bulkier than Mercury?
Saturn and the moon in question is Titan. Not only is Titan larger in size than Mercury, however, it also has something the tiniest planet doesn't: a substantial atmosphere. That makes it unique among all known moons in the Solar System.
Which planet is the only one named after a Greek god?
Uranus. The god Uranuss son, Cronus, is the Greek equivalent of the Roman god Saturn, and Cronuss sons Zeus and Poseidon are the Greek equivalents of Jupiter and Neptune, the other three giant planets. Uranuss Roman equivalent is Caelus.
Name the color that primarily makes up sunrises and sunsets on Mars.
Blue! As the Sun is closer to the horizon, dust particles on Mars filter blue from sunlight more efficiently than other colors. Later in the day, though, the sky gains more yellows and reds.
How many Earth years (about 365 days) does it take for Neptune to orbit the Sun?
Almost 165, nearly double its neighbor Uranus's 84-year orbit! Astronomers discovered Neptune in 1846, and in 2011, the windy globe completed its first revolution since being identified. Neptune will complete the second revolution in 2176.
Which planet has the nickname "Red Planet"?
Mars. Named for its distinctive, dusty-red color. This appearance is due to the abundance of iron oxide on the Martian surface. That is the same compound that creates rust on metal.
