One of the rewards of writing a technical book is to see the finished book on the reference shelf or in the library of colleagues. It is even better to see smudges on the pages, dog-ears, or page markers, thus indicating that the book had been usedperhaps multiple times. The Second Edition has found its way onto the shelves of many air pollution control professionals and its content has been put to use. For that, this writer is exceedingly grateful. In addition, the book has been used as an educational tool for those interested in the control of air pollutants. Favorable comments include that it is easy to read. That trait has been continued in this edition.

For the pollution control professional, the owner or reader of a technical book such as this, the information contained therein can at the very least assist them in the tasks associated with their job. Educational is fine but supportive is better. A book such as this should be a resource. A task may be the search for new air pollution control equipment for a new process or project. The goal may be replacement of an existing worn-out device. Or maybe they need to upgrade existing hardware to meet a new code. Perhaps the task is to reduce operating costs. Educating the operators of the equipment may be on the to-do list. Or maybe they just want to know what makes the hardware tick. Any or all of these tasks may be an inherent part of the readers job or interest. The writers goal is to produce the content that helps the reader achieve success in meeting those goals.

With technology, times change. Additional information is learned through experience. New concepts are developed and applied. Improved operating techniques are explored and tested. And, yes, lessons are learned from failures. One must keep up with the technology in order to achieve success. For that reason and others, technical books are periodically updated and, fortunately, technical publishers such as Taylor & Francis are willing to support the reader by publishing new and up-to-date content. Thus, this Third Edition was produced.

When information is published for a technical audience, folks invariably ask questions. Many of those questions involve the transition from general knowledge to specifics. For example, Can you go into greater depth about _______? Or I now have the hardware, but how do I integrate that equipment with the process? Or How can I reduce the operating costs? Or I dont think what I am operating is functioning at its peak performance. What can be done? As a writer, the task is to listen to those questions and supply supporting content that helps provide answers. It is beyond the scope of any such book to supply specific answers since the range of problems to be solved is so broad. There are thousands of processes to which air pollution control equipment has been applied.
