Title: Clinical orthopedic examination of a child / edited by Nirmal Raj Gopinathan.
Description: First edition. | Boca Raton, FL : CRC Press 2021. | Includes bibliographical references and index. | Summary: As always said Children are not young adults, and the examination of a child needs to be emphasized with special consideration to physiologic differences in a growing child. This book focuses on pediatric examination, a topic not much explored in the regular orthopedic texts. The difficulty of a child to express the symptoms needs to be kept in mind during examination, thus the examining surgeon has to be very observant in picking up even minor details that could help in diagnosis. This book serves as an essential companion to orthopedic surgeons, general practitioners and professionals as well as be helpful in pediatric orthopedic clinics-- Provided by publisher.

The trend in orthopedics today is an evolution into multiple subspecialties, which is actually the need of the hour. The subspecialty of pediatric orthopedics is unique and new, as it involves all the issues relevant to children, in addition to the disorders of the musculoskeletal system which we know of in adults. Over the years I have seen an evolution in pediatric orthopedics in our country paralleling that in the world; from a fledgling specialty in the 1980s with a few focused surgeons looking at children with musculoskeletal problems (due to their interest alone), pediatric orthopedics has changed a lot. Initially most of these specialists expertise needed to overlap into other spheres of orthopedics to be able to sustain a relevant medical practice, and survive; in the 21st century, however, there have been significant changes.
In 2021, we have now reached the stage where pediatric orthopedics can easily be practiced as a stand-alone specialty anywhere in the world, and even in India. Despite the fact that centers of excellence currently exist only in the larger Indian cities, it is important that the science and art focused on the musculoskeletal problems of children should be propagated all over the country. I am personally aware of the fact that many surgeons, even in the smaller cities, are taking up pediatric orthopedics as their primary practice profile; that is where we need the education and support so that these fledgling practices can flourish. This is a major reason why the current book, edited by Dr. Nirmal Raj Gopinathan, comes as a breath of fresh air, to reinforce the fact that pediatric orthopedics needs more input, more support, and more recognition.
