Main Body
Introduction
Four Sizes of Ukuleles

There are four types of ukuleles: soprano, concert, tenor and baritone. Visit http://ukulele.io/the-ukuleleguitar-family/ to see a video showing all four of these instruments.

Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles all tune to the pitches of G, C, E, A. While Rebecca prefers the tenor ukulele size and sound, I like the soprano because of its small size. It is extremely portable; I have taken it backpacking, cross country skiing, and on bike trips to play at campfire sing-alongs! A concert ukulele is slightly larger and can be more comfortable for adult hands. A tenor ukulele has a beautiful sound because the G string can be tuned an octave lower than on the soprano ukulele. The tenor ukulele is what Izzy (Israel Kamakawiwoole ) used on his beautiful recording of Over the Rainbow. If you follow all the steps outlined in this book, you will be able to play this song too. After all, several of my fifth graders were able to!

Baritone ukulele is tuned to D, G, B, E, just like the four highest strings of the guitar. Bari uke is also a beautiful instrument, and we have some of them at my school. However, since bari uke is tuned differently than the other ukuleles, I wont discuss how to play it in this book.

How to Buy a Ukulele

First, its a good idea to try some different ukuleles before you commit to one. One way to do this is to join a ukulele club. http://www.fleamarketmusic.com/directory offers a long list of clubs organized geographically. Another way is to shop for a ukulele at a local store, so you can try the different sizes of ukuleles to see which feels best. Ukuleles are popular right now, so they tend to sell out as quickly as they come in. Spend time trying out tenor, concert and soprano ukuleles to see which feels most comfortable. Visit http://ukulele.io/how-to-buy-a-ukulele to see Rebecca and I shopping for a new ukulele at Rebeccas local music store, MusicWorks of El Cerrito (California).
