Mythology for Dummies: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Mythology for Dummies" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Every culture and time has its myths. You might say that myths help us to understand people, since just like people they can be inspirational and beautiful, as well as cruel and violent. The main players in mythology are the original drama kings and queens -- they hang themselves in shame, poke out their own eyes, rule cities, and marry their relatives -- and the fun doesnt stop there! If you want all the scoop on gods and goddesses, fates and furies, monsters and heroes from around the world, Mythology for Dummies is the Whos Who of mythological figures that you cant do without.

Its no secret that mythology can be confusing for anyone. From cultural hero Johnny Appleseed, to manly Odysseus, to femme fatale Aphrodite, and those pesky Cyclops running amuck on that faraway island, Mythology for Dummies covers all the bases, including information on:

  • Greek mythology
  • Homers Iliad and Odyssey
  • Roman mythology
  • Virgils Aeneid
  • Beowulf
  • Non-European mythology

Also, this book will get you up to speed on the heavy stuff--like how mythology intersects with our lives, and explores the meaning of existence. Organized into chapters on specific topics, it breaks down the common types of myths and mythological figures, and offers plain-English explanations of how myths have appeared in cultures throughout the ages. Youll find what you need to know on these topics and many more:

  • What makes myths different from legends and fairy tales
  • Greek creation myths and those really ancient Greek Gods
  • The Olympian Gods (taller, younger, and better looking than you)
  • The Greek goddesses (the fairest and the meanest of them all)
  • Heroes -- made, born, and re-born
  • Mythological places from Elysium Fields, to Atlantis, and Xanadu
  • Roman religion -- how it was begged, borrowed, and stolen
Youll also enjoy helpful features like charts comparing major figures, and a tear-out tip-sheet with a timeline of world civilizations. Whether you want to dabble in the wonders of mythology or get serious, Mythology for Dummies will demystify the subject, and show you how important myths can be to a culture. Youll never say, Its only a myth again!

About the Authors

Christopher W. Blackwell earned a BA in Classics from Marlboro College in Vermont and a PhD in Classics from Duke University in North Carolina. He is the author of a book on the political history of Greece in the fourth century BCE In the Absence of Alexander (Peter Lang, New York, 1999) and is an editor and contributor to several ongoing projects aimed at bringing the ancient world to wide audiences via the World Wide Web. He is currently a professor of Classics at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and gets to spend his days exploring the language, history, literature, and mythology of the ancient world with some very smart young people.

Amy Hackney Blackwell has degrees in Medieval and Renaissance History from Duke and Vanderbilt Universities. She also has a JD from the University of Virginia, but has given up the practice of law for the more interesting (if less lucrative) practice of writing not surprisingly, most of what she writes is either on history or law. She has lived and worked all over Europe and Asia, including two years in rural Japan, and speaks several foreign languages. She and Chris enjoy skydiving and scuba diving, but not at the same time.

Introduction

T his book is about mythology, the stories people tell that really matter. It can be argued that that the telling of myths is one of the most important things human beings do. Everyone tells myths. Every culture of every time produces myths. Put together all of these myths and you come up with the subject of mythology, a vast body of stories about heroes, gods, monsters, and forces of nature.
