TABLE OF CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION

Back in 2008, our group of five kids and five moms formed a neighborhood parent-kid book club. We parents did it because our kids were just starting to read on their own and we wanted to encourage their book-loving ways. They were also starting to build their first real friendships. We figured being in a book club together would give them extra time to play with their new friends. And a bonuswe could get to know some other parents better.

These were small goals. None of us expected the group to last more than a few years.

But our kids loved book club. Whenever we suggested scaling it back or quitting altogether (when they entered middle school and again at the start of high school), the kids refused. They even asked if we could meet more often, not less, and read more books! Those first graders are all grown up now. Weve had one hundred book club meetings and have read one hundred books together. It still blows our minds.

Over the years, some members have left and new members have joined. The types of books we read together have changed. The depth of our discussions has changed. How we do our meetings has changed. But our love of reading has remained constant. And as our once-pint-size cutie-pies started to head off to college elsewhere, we decided to write this book together.

Over the years weve had lots of people ask, How can we start our own book club? And the follow-up questions: How old should the kids be when we start? How do you find good books? What do we do at the meetings? This book has answers to those questions and plenty more. It has everything you need to know to start your own group, run your meetings, choose great books, and adapt as your kids get older. With this book you can start a group just like ours, or bust out and do your own unique thing.

This book club has been a life-changing experience for us. We realize that it has been a tremendous privilege to be able to create a book club with our kids. We hope that this book describes a variety of ways that anyone can create a book club with the wonderful kids in their life, even if they face serious time crunches or other obstacles. Book club doesnt have to cost any money or take more than a couple of hours each month, and it can be a great way to spend some positive time with a child. We hope to inspire more kids to read books, more adults to read books, and more families to talk about books together.

So give it a try. You wont regret it!
