Children with Dyslexia
Dear Reader,
I have a son who could not read until age eleven. That was ten years ago; now my son is an avid reader who did well in high school and won admission to a number of selective colleges, and is now living on his own, embarking on an exciting and rewarding career. There was a time that I feared a diagnosis of dyslexia, thinking it would mean that something was terribly wrong with my son's brain. Instead, I learned that dyslexia is merely one facet of something wonderfully right with my son's brain it is the flip side of his extraordinary creativity, his wonderful sense of humor, his quick grasp of mathematical concepts, and his knack for solving problems.
In 1995, I became the Webmaster for the Dyslexia, the Gift Web site at www.dyslexia.com . Almost as soon as the site went up, I was deluged with e-mail from people all over the world, mostly from parents like you desperately seeking help for their kids. In the years since, I have been privy to hundreds of success stories like my son's but I also have met many parents who are simply overwhelmed by contradictory information and choices that they face. I cannot give you a crystal ball to predict your child's future, but I hope that I can help guide you through the maze.
I feel tremendously privileged to be able to write this book, to share much of what I have learned over the years and to learn new things myself in the course of my research. I hope you will find this book to be a valuable reference and starting point, and I hope that it will also help you find some of the answers you are looking for. Your journey will be different than mine, but if you have faith in your child, I think you will find that you are just as richly rewarded at the end.
This book is dedicated in loving memory to Elizabeth Misty Davis.
