    INTRODUCTION

Progressive Flute Method For Young Beginners has been designed to introduce the younger student to the basics of playing the flute and reading music. The book uses original material specifically written to teach particular techniques and combinations of notes, along with well known childrens songs which consolidate everything learned. All songs have been carefully graded into an easy to follow, lesson by lesson format which assumes no prior knowledge of music by the student.

At the beginning of the book, the student is introduced to the basic principles of holding the flute, lip position and sounding a note before tackling playing and music reading. Along the way the student learns note and rest values and the * and ^ time signatures.

The exercises and songs incorporate quarter, half and whole notes and their equivalent rests, along with eighth notes and dotted quarter notes. The student is taught how to read rhythms, and introduced to basic terms such as bar lines, repeat signs and lead-in notes.

The book covers all the natural notes, along with sharps, flats and natural signs. The keys of F and G major are introduced along with their respective major scales. There are also several duets to help the student become confident when playing as part of an ensemble.

A Word About Intonation and Timing

Many young students have difficulty in playing with correct intonation consistently. This will improve with practice and experience. It is important to understand the concept of exact pitches, but not to worry if the student has intonation problems at first. Careful listening will help with intonation, but it is best to work on this aspect of playing with a teacher right from the beginning.

One of the most important things about learning music is developing a good sense of time. To get the student on the right track from the start, the use of a metronome is strongly recommended for daily practice.

There are various types of metronome available, from the old wind-up style to modern electronic metronome. Electronic metronomes are recommended because they are more accurate and often have a volume control as well as an earphone input so only the student need hear it.

    Parts of the Flute

The flute is made up of three sections the head joint, the middle joint and the foot joint. These are shown in this photo. Notice the mouthhole on the head joint. Notes are sounded on the flute by blowing air across the mouthhole.

Make sure your flute has all the parts shown in this photo and that there are no cracks or dents in any of the parts. If there are, it will be difficult or even impossible to get a good sound. For this reason you should always be careful not to bump your flute against hard surfaces and to put it away in its case when you are not using it.

    Assembling the Flute

Before you begin playing the flute, you will need to know how to assemble it correctly. Begin by inserting the head joint into the middle joint with a gentle twisting motion. Align the mouth hole with the key on the middle joint as shown:

Attach the foot joint to the middle joint. Rotate it so that the middle of the first lever on the foot joint is opposite the end of the shaft on the middle joint as shown in the photo. The exact alignment of the parts on the flute is a personal thing. The positions given here are good guides, but you may wish to alter them slightly once you are more familiar with the flute.
