INTRODUCTION Progressive Beginner Clarinet assumes you have no prior knowledge - photo 9
    INTRODUCTION

Progressive Beginner Clarinet assumes you have no prior knowledge of music or playing the clarinet. This book will show you the basics of playing and reading music. The book is suitable for anyone who wants to learn to play the clarinet. No previous musical knowledge or experience is necessary. Each new note and technique is introduced separately and all examples sound great and are fun to play.

The book also features a chart listing all fingerings for the clarinet. All clarinet players should know all of the information contained in this book. On completion of the book, you will be ready to begin improvising and playing with other musicians and will already be able to play many tunes and be making great sounds.

The best and fastest way to learn is to use this book in conjunction with:

    • Buying sheet music and song books of your favorite recording artists and learning to play their songs. By learning songs, you will begin to build a repertoire and always have something to play in jam sessions.
    • Practicing and playing with other musicians. You will be surprised how good a basic drums/bass/guitar/clarinet or drums/bass/keyboard/clarinet combination can sound even when playing easy music.
    • Learning by listening to your favorite recordings. Start building a collection of albums of players you admire or wish to emulate. Try playing along with one of them for a short time each day. Most of the great Jazz clarinet players have learned a lot of their music this way.

Also in the early stages it is helpful to have the guidance of an experienced teacher. This will also help you keep to a schedule and obtain weekly goals. To help you develop a good sense of time it is recommended that you always practice with a metronome or drum machine.

SECTION 1 Learning the Notes Basic Techniques Before You Begin Clarinets - photo 10
    SECTION 1
    Learning the Notes, Basic Techniques
    Before You Begin
    Clarinets

Clarinets may be made of wood or plastic, both having metal keys. Good clarinets can be expensive, so you may want to hire one until you are sure you are going to persevere with it. Many music stores have good clarinets to rent, and some also have hire purchase plans.

If you are buying a secondhand instrument, there are a couple of things to look out for. First make sure there are no dents, bends or cracks in the instrument, as this will affect the tuning. Also check for leakage by asking someone to play over the range of the instrument to see whether all the notes sound properly. If possible, have a professional check out the instrument before you buy it.

    Reeds

The reed is attached to the mouthpiece and vibrates to create a sound when you blow. Most reeds are made of cane, although it is possible to buy synthetic reeds. To begin with, you will probably need to use a fairly soft reed such as a 1or 1 .As your lips and facial muscles develop you will be able to play with harder reeds.

The higher the number on the reed, the thicker it is, making it harder to play but also producing a stronger tone. The choice of reeds is a fairly personal thing. When selecting a new reed, make sure it has no cracks around the tip and is not warped. These things can make it difficult or impossible to get a good sound. Keep your reed in its plastic cover between practice sessions. This way it will last longer.

    Approach to Practice

From the beginning you should set yourself a goal. Many people learn clarinet because of a desire to play like their favourite artist (e.g., Buddy De Franco or Benny Goodman), or to play a certain style of music (e.g., Jazz, Blues, Rock or Classical).

Motivations such as these will help you to persevere through the more difficult sections of work, but dont set your immediate goals too high at first. Aim for something within your reach and update your goals as your playing develops.
