Foreword
There is no question that a strong working knowledge of Spanish is becoming increasingly important in the United States and Canada for cultural, commercial, and political reasons alike. Many English-speakers who have a basic knowledge of Spanish need a text that can serve as a bridge between that knowledge and any advanced material they may need to focus on, such as in the fields of medicine, law, business, or literature.
Steven R. Hawsons The Complete Idiots Guide to Intermediate Spanish, Second Edition, is just such a text, explaining grammar and syntax in an innovative way and continuing to provide benefits through repeated readings.
The Complete Idiots Guide to Intermediate Spanish, Second Edition, is an ideal text for students who have already studied the fundamentals and are eager to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Introduction
Welcome to The Complete Idiots Guide to Intermediate Spanish, Second Edition. But wait isnt there already The Complete Idiots Guide to Spanish? Well, yes, there is. The Complete Idiots Guide to Learning Spanish on Your Own, by Gail Stein, has become a popular textbook for beginning students of Spanish. Similar teach-yourself guides have also enjoyed great success in recent years. With so many advanced beginners out there, we realized that it was time to offer an intermediate resource to those students who are ready to progress to the next level. Thats where The Complete Idiots Guide to Intermediate Spanish, Second Edition, comes in. This book has been specifically designed to take you beyond the basics and introduce you to many of the finer points of the Spanish language.
You dont have to have read The Complete Idiots Guide to Learning Spanish on Your Own to use this book. This is not a volume two. In fact, the only requirement is that somewhere along the line you have acquired a basic knowledge of Spanish (no matter how rudimentary or rusty your skills might be) and that you feel ready to learn more. If this sounds like you, youve come to the right place. Hang on to your sombrero and get ready for The Complete Idiots Guide to Intermediate Spanish, Second Edition.
About the Second Edition
No, there was nothing really wrong with the first edition. However, in the years since The Complete Idiots Guide to Intermediate Spanish was first published in 2000, a few things have changed. First, over 50 percent of the Internet sites that appeared in the first edition have gone belly up. So, we went through the book and replaced the dead Internet sites with active ones. There have also been several political changes in the various Spanish-speaking countries, rendering some of the statistics from the first edition out-of-date. A handful of minor typos that got past us in the first have now been corrected, and a number of the examples have been improved throughout the text. The second edition also contains a workbook section, rather than quizzes at the end of each chapter, thus making it easier for you to keep your work together. Other improvements have also been made here and there as needed.
How This Book Is Organized
Studying a new language is always a challenge, even under the best of circumstances. To make the experience as pleasant as possible, I have tried to make this book fun and easy to readwithout compromising its content. Yes, youll find grammar, vocabulary lists, quizzes, and activities. But there will also be jokes, timesaving hints, and new perspectives about the language that you probably werent exposed to when you were a beginner. I promise that it wont be all dry linguistic stuff.
The Complete Idiots Guide to Intermediate Spanish, Second Edition, is divided into five parts:
Part 1, So You Want to Learn Intermediate Spanish: Qu Bueno! prepares you for the rigors of the book by reviewing in detail some of the nuts and bolts of the language, such as pronunciation, spelling, stress, and accent marks. Youll also find suggestions for getting the most out of your learning experience.
Part 2, Getting to Know the Spanish-Speaking World, introduces you to your first Spanish texts. Each reading deals with some aspect of a country or region where Spanish is spoken. Youll also learn some basic facts about the various countries that make up
