    To Kim, with much love

    Contents

It has been twenty years since I first envisioned a book of charts that would assemble a wide spectrum of material about the Old Testament. I was a graduate student just embarking on my professional career, but it seemed that such a book would serve a helpful purpose for teachers and students alike. The response has overwhelmingly confirmed that my intuition was correct. The appearance of a number of chart books in other areas, many foreign language translations, and more than twenty printings of this volume have been gratifying testimony to the welcome this concept has received.

Even during the first couple of years that this book was on the market, people began to mention that there was a lot more that could be done. Additionally, as I began teaching, I developed more and more material for classroom use. Finally the time has come to expand the original Chronological and Background Charts of the Old Testament. This revised edition nearly doubles the number of charts. Of the new charts, several have already appeared in print in the Survey of the Old Testament that I published several years ago with Andrew Hill. Many others were put together (e.g., Egyptian Chronology); some reflect a different approach to the material (e.g., Chronology of the Kings of Israel and Judah; Classification of the Psalms).

The charts have been arranged in different categories than in the first edition. I trust that the new arrangement will be found convenient. I have also taken advantage of this opportunity to add a subject index that I think will be useful.

It is my hope and prayer that this new edition will further enhance the readers understanding of the Old Testament and its background and will increase enthusiasm for the Old Testament as an important segment of Gods revelation of himself to us.
