Easy Introduction to Ayurveda
Ayurveda as old as the creation!
Ayurveda is the oldest medical science. It originated from India. Even today, this amazing medical science continues to grow from India to all parts of the globe.
The Sanskrit word Ayurveda is derived from two words
Ayu = life
Veda = science
Ayurveda helps us to live all aspects of our lives in the best possible manner. Ayurveda uses natural resources such as herbs to promote health and to treat diseases.
The purpose of Ayurveda is
To maintain the health of healthy individuals
To treat the disease in patients
How Ayurveda Perceives Human Body?
The modern system understands the body, starting from cells, cellular components, tissues, organs and systems such as respiratory system, digestive system etc.
Ayurveda looks at human body through a prism called Tridosha. It is a set of three factors
Vata dosha, Pitta dosha and Kapha dosha.
Ayurveda explains, like air, sunlight and water control the Earths atmosphere, in human body, Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas control physical and mental health.
If the wind blows strong or temperature is too high or if it rains heavily, there will be imbalance in our atmosphere. Similarly, in the body, if Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas aggravate, it leads to diseases.
Air, sunlight and water show their effect on the land and living beings. Similarly, Vata, Pitta and Kapha show their effect on body tissues.
Dhatu Body Tissue
Ayurveda explains there are seven types of body tissues called as Dhatus. They are
Rasa Dhatu | Nutritious part of food in blood circulation, also compared with lymph |
Rakta Dhatu | Blood tissue |
Mamsa Dhatu | Muscle tissue |
Medo Dhatu | Fat tissue |
Asthi Dhatu | Bone tissue |
Majja Dhatu | Bone marrow |
Shukra Dhatu | Reproductive tissue. |
The three Doshas | Vata, Pitta and Kapha act upon these body tissues to maintain health. |
Process of Digestion
The food we take is digested with the help of digestive fire, called Agni as per Ayurveda. The digested food is divided into nutritious and waste parts. The nutritious part nourishes all the seven body tissues. The waste part in the form of urine, faeces and sweat is eliminated out. The entire process of digestion is influenced by Tridosha.
