TIPS AND TRICKS
ADVANCED TECHNIQUE
Perfect Pivoting - A technique similar to Melee's Wavedashing. To perfect pivot, dash in one direction, then quickly flick the control stick in the other direction. This causes the character to slide along the ground in the flicked direction. Just like Melee's Wavedashing, a fighter's Perfect Pivots cover different distances. Jigglypuff has the shortest Perfect Pivot, while Captain Falcon has the longest, covering 3 times as much distance. If you remap the attack and special buttons (by moving A/B to ZL/ZR), you can dash one way while holding the c-stick (set to Smash attacks) the opposite direction to pull of easy perfect pivots. As with Melee's Wavedashing, perfect pivotting is essential to competitive play as it allows for quick stage control and also assists with mind games.
Directional Influence (DI), is a technique that allows a player to control where they are launched or moved. It can help prevent KOs even at high percentages if your DI alters your path just right. There are three types of DI: Directional Influence, Tap/Smash DI, and Momentum Canceling. Basic Directional Influence is relatively simple, you simply move your control stick where you want to go. If you are launched vertically, tilt the control stick to the left or right. If launched horizontally, tilt the control stick to the upper left or the upper right, in the opposite direction you are launched. Tap/Smash DI is controlling the direction a character moves in multiple hit moves or combos. This is essentially mashing the control stick or c-stick in a certain direction to escape grabs or endless jabs. While this is a natural response for people, many don't know that it actually does affect your character and can get you out of a tight spot or prevent a KO. Momentum cancelling is another last ditch effort through using a quick aeriel attack and then either a fast fall (press down on the control stick) or a jump to get yourself back to the stage as quickly as possible.
Ledge Punishing - Unlike in Melee, Smash 4 does not grant you invincibility after you grab an edge a second time. This makes ledge stalling punishable. Some characters even have their hitboxes above the ledge, allowing for easy horizontal attacks to punish the opponent. Other smaller opponents can be spiked if you jump off and aerial. However, you need to be careful that you are not too predictable in going for a ledge punish, for the opponent can do a get-up attack and punish you instead.
