Introduction
Despite todays increased availability of healthy foods, exercisefacilities, low-carb and low-fat foods, diet sodas, diet plans, literally thousands of weight loss supplementsand even weight lossprescription medicationmore and more people are overweight. TheWorld Health Organization has estimated that by 2015, approximately2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 millionobese
Psychologist Kelly Brownell, director of theYale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders, coined the term toxicenvironment to explain the cause of the culture of overeating seenin America today. New York nutritionist Marion Nestle describes theorigin of this toxic environment with two words: improvedprosperity. Certainly we have prospered over the past 20 years;so has the weight-loss industry. The money spent trying to fightoff the weight will exceed $60 billion dollars in 2008, just in theU.S. alone.
Not only do more people become obese everyyear, they also weigh more than ever. In 1962, the average manweighed 166 pounds. By 2002, the average had reached 191 pounds andis still on the rise. In the same time period, the average womansweight rose from 140 pounds to 164 pounds, and this number is stillgrowing today. How this happened, is easy to understand. Easilyobtained, pleasurable food is everywhere we look. In the past 30years, the average food intake from meals has increased by 120calories a day (enough to account for a 12 lb. weight gain a year)and the calories from snacks by a shocking 180 calories a day.Instead of three meals a day, most of us are eating every threehours.
Obesity is associated with an increased riskof diabetes, cardiovascular events, stroke and cancer. Moreover, adecrease in calorie intake lowers the risk of diabetes, hypertension, stroke and cardiovascular diseases in obesepopulations. Everyone is acquainted with the most common form ofdietary restriction --daily calorie restriction which requiresindividuals to reduce their calorie intake from 15% to 40% ofeveryday needs. Another type of dietary restriction used, althoughfar less frequently, is part time dieting. This includes alternateday fasting (ADF) and modified alternate day fasting [MADF; i.e.,consuming 25% to 40% of energy needs on the fast day and unlimitedfood intake on the non-fasting days]
Im going to introduce you to thebreakthrough idea of part time dieting. This relatively new dietstrategy has helped my patients lose hundreds of pounds and keep itoff. Part time dieting means restricting calories to only two daysa week and eating normally the other daysthus the term 2 Day a Week Diet . This plan eliminatesmuch of the sufferings and setbacks that usually come with dailyfood restriction. I encourage you to try dieting just one moretime. I promise you that there is a way. The beauty of this methodis that it is extremely effortless. It contradicts everything youhave ever tried. Reading this book will clear up a lot of the mythsand help you to understand what is exceedingly critical in order tolose weight. Instead of altering all of your deep-rooted, personalhabits, you are encouraged to embrace them, know who you are, andaccept what you like and dislike. Eat what you want, or just be alittle more careful and you will lose at least one lb for each fastday a week. This new system asks you to make the changes on twodays a week. On each day, you will eliminate 1500 to 2000 caloriesalmost automatically. If you eliminate only a few unhealthy foodson the non-fast days there is actually no limit to the amount ofweight you can lose.
