Chapter 1
General Information
DECODING THE LAW SCHOOL ADMISSION TEST

This book is designed to help you figure out questions on LSAT PrepTests 7276 as part of your LSAT preparation. Each chapter tackles a different PrepTest and provides complete explanations for each question of these real Law School Admission Council (LSAC) tests. These explanations also include strategies and tips about how to eliminate certain answers.

Work through each PrepTest on your own, and then review your performance using our explanations. This will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and better understand the logic of the LSAT. Weve also categorized the various questions and labeled their corresponding explanations with tabs, to help you exploit any shortcuts or patterns you find within them.

In the following introduction, well look at how to identify those categories from the question stem and provide one key point about each. Well also look at some efficient and standardized ways to approach each of the three main sections of the test: Analytical Reasoning (Games), Logical Reasoning (Arguments), and Reading Comprehension.

STRUCTURE OF THE LSAT

The LSAT is a tightly timed, multiple-choice test that almost always consists of 99 to 102 questions. By tightly timed, we mean that the test is designed so that the average test taker (someone scoring around the fiftieth percentile) should not be able to comfortably complete all the questions in the time allotted.

To be more specific, the LSAT is made up of five 35-minute multiple-choice sections and one 35-minute essay. Two of the five multiple-choice sections will be Logical Reasoning (Arguments), one will be Analytical Reasoning (Games), and one will be Reading Comprehension. The remaining section (which is usually one of the first three to be administered) will be an experimental section that will not count toward your score.

This experimental section
can be Arguments,
Games, or Reading
Comprehension.

As you may have already noticed, the order of these sections changes with each administered PrepTest. This is because the only consistent thing about the format of the LSAT is the 10-15 minute break given between sections 3 and 4, and that the essay will be at the end of the test. Also, bear in mind that the experimental section is not included in LSACs official PrepTest book. If youre trying to prepare for the pacing of this test, you might consider using one or two sample tests to supplement the others. (For instance, insert the Reading Comprehension section from PrepTest 76 after the first Arguments section in PrepTest 72. Just make sure you keep track of which tests youve already taken.)

Because the essay is unscored,
this book does not
include samples. However,
a scan of your essay is
sent to each school that
you apply to, so if youre
feeling uncomfortable
with this section, we
recommend checking out
some of the successful
submissions found in
Law School Essays That
Made a Difference.

WHEN IS THE LSAT GIVEN?

The LSAT is administered four times a yearFebruary, June, September/October, and December. Typically, students applying for regular fall admission to a law program take the test during June or September/October of the previous calendar year. You can take the test in December or February, but many schools will have filled at least a portion of their seats by the time your scores hit the admissions office.
