The Study It ESL series an engaging eBook for teaching non-native English speakers. It takes advantage of the iBooks format to include video and audio in a way that supports the lessons and never feels added on as an "enhancement." The Grammar books use a number of different assessment formats to allow users to test themselves throughout the book and see their scores. The book even uses the Note function in iBooks effectively for long-form answers. While the content of the book is challenging, it makes learning grammar easy and fun. - Digital Book World Judging Panel, New York QED Seal of Approval

FOREWARD Welcome to Study It. Thank you for downloading our digital textbook. The Study It series is an interactive digital textbook for English as a Second Language students and teachers.
It can act as a self-study book or as in-class textbook. The Study It team is a big believer in Mobile Learning, Project-Based Learning and Flipping the Classroom. We hope the Study It series acts as a tool for teachers to expand these teaching strategies. Students need to prepare for the 21st Century and Mobile Learning is the first step forward. E-Learning has given students the opportunity to learn at home - away from the traditional classroom. M-Learning has taken E-learning to another level by allowing students to learn ANYWHERE.
Students can study while traveling, on vacation, during breaks or any other free time they may have. Students are growing up in a world where they can learn anywhere, any time. However, Mobile learning means more than simply making books and notes are portable or they are easy to carry around on devices such as iPads or iPhones. M-Learning allows students to learn through multiple contexts rather than simply online or at a PC. This means students will learn by: reading, writing, watching video, listening to audio, doing projects and engaging with different people online or in the general public. Teachers have discussed the benefits and challenges to M-Learning with us as we developed the books.
This is what they have told us about M-Learning. Benefits These devices are easier to carry than textbooks or PCs Classroom materials are much, much cheaper M-Learning supports the learning process but the teacher-student relationship remains the central focus. Mobile devices do not replace the teacher but help the student. Learning is continuous The material can be updated with new ideas, theories or activities Early success shows that is a more rewarding experience It provides teachers with new tools and ideas to make their classroom better. Information can be stored, saved and shared forever. Learning is active The classroom can be anywhere Challenges Schools must change their curriculum and the change can be expensive Training of teachers who may feel intimidated by technology can be difficult.
A wide variety of platforms and apps available that can be overwhelming. Security of devices in the schools The need for flexibility in the school, the teachers and with the content. In our discussions and feedback sessions with students, they have the following expectations for educators: Students have to live in the 21st Century and they want to be treated as a 21st Century student. Students want to learn how to better use their device for learning, studying and for their future work. Students want teachers to learn, train and improve their ability Students want to make sure that Mobile Devices are being used for a specific, reasonable, learning outcome - not just for watching YouTube videos or emailing the teacher. Students want to use their Mobile Device outside the classroom not just during class time.
They want to be challenged. There are also some things that students dont want to see in their classrooms anymore: CDs, DVDs, textbooks and photocopies. These represent the past. 10 tablets for 14 students is not good. Tablets should be shared evenly or everyone should have one. The focus should be on the student and not the teachers amazing use of the Mobile Device.
Teachers should not complain about the technology. They should learn it. This is our future. Ask us for help. We know the technology too. Dont be ashamed to learn with us.
Students can be very valuable in a Mobile Learning environment. They understand the importance of Mobile Devices and they are seeking the guidance of schools and teachers. They dont want to be entertained; they want to learn a new skill set. We hope the Study It textbooks series will be a great jump off point for teachers to experiment with Mobile Learning, Project-Based Learning and Flipping the Classroom. Our series can also be downloaded on iTunes where there are more interactive activities for students and teachers to use. Thank you again for your purchase of the series and please join our forums and share you ideas to help bring ESL education into the 21st century.
James Rice UNIT 1 Ordering at a Restaurant What would you like today? One of the first, big challenges using English is ordering food. This lesson focuses on common expressions that we use at a restaurant. 1. What is your favourite food? Why? 2. Do you tip at restaurants? How much? 3. What is the most common food in your country?
