Ideas for Parents
and Teachers
Pogo Books let children practice
reading informational text while
introducing them to nonfiction
features such as headings, labels,
sidebars, maps, and diagrams,
as well as a table of contents,
glossary, and index. Carefully leveled text with
a strong photo match offers
early fluent readers the support
they need to succeed.
Before Reading
Walk through the book and
point out the various nonfiction
features. Ask the student what
purpose each feature serves. Look at the glossary together.
Read and discuss the words.
Read the Book
Have the child read the book
independently.
Invite him or her to list questions
that arise from reading.
After Reading
Discuss the childs questions.
Talk about how he or she might
find answers to those questions. Prompt the child to think more.
Ask: What is your favorite fruit?
Does it grow from a tree, a bush,
or a vine? Have you ever grown
it yourself? Pogo Books are published by Jump!

GROWING
FRUIT
What do apples
and strawberries
have in common? Both have seeds.
Both are sweet. Both are fruit! 4 CHAPTER 1
The best time to plant
fruit depends on
where you live.
A good time to plant
is in the spring. CHAPTER 1
Most fruits need at least
six hours of full sun each
day. They need good
air circulation . Choose a spot thats not
too windy. Too much wind
can blow fruit off the plants.
It can keep useful insects
like bees away.
DID YOU KNOW?
Fruit is the part of a plant
that holds the seeds.
You
may think that peas and
peppers are vegetables.
But they are actually fruit!
Because they are not sweet,
we think of them as vegetables. What
other vegetables are actually fruit? CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 1
Do you know what fruits you want
to plant? If so, you need to find
out how much sun and space
your plants need to grow. If you have a lot of space,
you can plant fruit trees. CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER
TREES AND
BERRIES
Most gardeners plant
young fruit trees that
are already in pots. 10 CHAPTER 2
Fruit trees need a lot of sun. The soil must
have good drainage .
If the soil holds too
much water, the roots can rot. CHAPTER 2
In late winter or early spring,
you need to prune fruit trees. Pruning helps a tree get more
sun and grow more fruit.
Mulch will help keep weeds
and pests away. Most fruit
trees bear fruit three
to four years after you
plant them.
DID YOU KNOW?
Many fruit trees such as
plums and peaches need
the cold winter to make
spring flowers. The flowers
turn into fruit! CHAPTER 2
CHAPTER 2
CHAPTER 2
If you dont have much space,
you can plant dwarf trees .
These smaller trees are
easier to prune.
They will
give fruit faster. Berries also dont need a lot
of space, and they are easy
to grow.
DID YOU KNOW?
Watermelons need a lot of space.
They grow on a vine that spreads
out along the ground.
They do well in places
where there is a lot of sun
and the nights are warm. CHAPTER 2
Berries need a lot of sun.
Water the plants when they
need it. Adding compost
to well -drained soil will
help them grow. CHAPTER 2
CHAPTER 2
You will want to protect your
plants from pests like slugs
and beetles.
If you can, plant berries
in a place where you can
look at them every day.
This will help you see
pests quickly so you can
remove them. CHAPTER 2
