Similar to the SAT, the GRE is a standardizedtest used for university admissions. The GRE is used for graduateadmissions, although not all schools and programs of study willrequire applicants to submit GRE results.
Your GRE score may be used to determine whetheror not you will be admitted to the program of study to which youapplied, whether you are eligible for scholarships, and/or whetheryou will be considered for any fellowships. It is important to notethat not all admissions offices assign GRE scores the same level ofimportance.
The GRE was created in 1949 by ETS (EducationalTesting Services) and is administered worldwide. The test measurescritical thinking, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning andanalytical writing skills acquired by students. The fee for takingthis test is normally between $100 and $250, depending on where youare taking the test, however there are financial aid programs inplace to help students pay for this fee.
Since 2011, students are asked to take what isreferred to as the New GRE. The test has been redesigned andreviewed and now offers new features. The old version of the GREwas a computer-adaptive test (CAT), which means that you mustanswer questions as they come up on the screen (no going back ormoving forward). The New GRE, however, is still computer-based butis based on sections rather than questions. This means that thefollowing section will be selected according to how well you did onthe previous section and youll be able to skip and go back tocertain questions. This new feature is also a central concept ofthe stress management techniques and test-taking tips that will bediscussed in this guide. Youll also be able to use a basiccalculator directly on the screen.
Students headed to graduate school are the oneswho will need to take the GRE. As mentioned above, not all graduateapplicants will be asked to supply GRE scores, so it is best to getin touch with the admissions office of your school to determinewhether you are required to take the test.
Business school applicants are usually requiredto take the GRE if the program is taught in English. For applicantshoping to study certain sciences, amongst other subjects, GREsubject test results may be required at certain schools.
Depending on the type of GRE you are taking, youhave various options concerning timing. The general GRE can betaken any time throughout the year and is administered at more than700 testing locations around the world. The general GRE iscomputerized.
However, if you are interested in taking a GREsubject test, you will want to pay particular attention to thetesting dates. GRE subject tests are administered three times eachyear, in October, November, and April. These tests are paper-basedand may not be available at all testing locations, so it is yourresponsibility to register at a location that can administer thespecific subject test you need to take.
There are two different GRE tests: the GeneralGRE and the GRE Subject test. It is important to understand thedifference between the two, as some applicants have to take both, whereas others only have to take one.
The General test is the most common test takenby graduate applicants. It is designed to reflect the types ofquestions and problems youll most likely encounter in any graduateor business school through three main sections, as listed byETS:
a) Verbal Reasoning: This sectionmeasures your ability to analyze written material, and closelyresembles a reading comprehension evaluation. Youll be asked toevaluate relationships between component parts of sentences, words, and various concepts
b) Quantitative Reasoning: This sectionmeasures your ability to solve problems using general arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data concepts
c) Analytical Writing: This sectionmeasures your critical thinking skills and your ability toarticulate complex ideas clearly
The New GRE also slightly varies from the oldCAT version in content and structure. Here are the main pointsunderlining the differences between both versions:
a) Verbal Reasoning: The old version ofthe GRE offered four main types of questions classified as sentencecompletion, analogies, reading comprehension and antonyms. Therevised GRE, however, does not use analogies or antonyms. Theemphasis will be put on sentence completion as well as a newcategory called sentence equivalence. For example, youll be askedto identify two word choices offering the same meaning. The readingcomprehension questions of the revised version will also includemultiple answer questions and sentence highlighting (highlightingthe passage where the answer can be found)
b) Quantitative Reasoning: The old GREoffered two quantitative question types: multiple choice andquantitative comparisons. The new version, however, also includesmultiple answer questions and numeric entry questions
