Acknowledgments
My 50 years of experience as a pediatrician, mother, and grandmother and my knowledge of children could not have been offered to parents without the help of a special family. Thirty years ago when I practiced in San Diego, I had stopped taking new patients because my pediatric practice had become too large and busy. Despite this, Barbara Hinton persuaded me to be the pediatrician for her three girls. We had a long friendship until her death three years ago and her input for this book, as well as those of her two daughters, Alisa and Stephanie, now young mothers, made all the difference.
Parents, these days, face a somewhat scary and different world. I hope by sharing my experience and training, as well as the questions and input from the young mothers, that this book can be a great help to all parents.
I want to thank all members of the Hinton family: Barbara, Mel, Jennifer, Alisa, and Stephanie for their help, friendship, and support. Barbara asked me to add this last word that Parents need to remember to always do what is in the best interest of each child.
My grandchildren, Heather and Alexander Thompson and my son, Dr. Geoffrey Thompson helped immensely with editing and computer help and I am very grateful.
The Publisher, Doug Brown, his office manager, Crystal Edwards and all those in Atlantic Publishing who helped make this book available for parents deserve my greatest thanks.
Foreword
Dr. Charlotte Thompson has written a lovely guide which shares her wise counsel. Countless parents have benefited from her assistance during her many years as a practicing pediatrician. Now all parents can read her thoughts on raising healthy, happy children.
I was first introduced to Dr. Charlotte when as a psychologist working with children in San Diego; I met a great many parents who sang her praises. They were delighted to be able to rely on her expertise, her practical suggestions, and her support. It is a pleasure to see that Dr. Charlottes words are now in print. All parents will be able to access the information and resources needed to meet each new situation as it arises; they will have a complete guidebook, from this seasoned expert, who knows and loves children.
Dr. Charlotte not only loves and respects children; she loves, respects, and understands their parents. She has dedicated herself to the care of children and their parents for nearly 50 years. She was always there to address every concern, physical or psychological. She was always willing to go the extra mile or ten for the children and parents in her care. For many years, she had evening seminars for parents covering a wide variety of child development topics. It was my privilege to speak to one of her evening groups. I was impressed by the large turnout, the keen interest of the participants and the level of sophistication she had cultivated in the parents of her child patients. The discussion was lively and positive with her warm support.
