For many parents, it is easier to do the chores themselves.

It takes more effort and resources to teach and inspire kids to do chores, so many parents will just do the chores to save time and avoid arguments with their kids.

However, if they do everything and dont train their kids to learn the skills and get in habit of helping, kids will grow up not having the basic skills needed to organize a home.

Not all chores can be done by the kids due to their physical limitations. Here are what we see as age-appropriate chores.

For children ages 4-5

These children can do chores with minimal supervision, like dressing themselves, making their beds, bringing things from the car to the house, putting away their toys and washing their hands.

They could, with supervision, help setting and clearing the table, preparing the food, sorting the laundry, matching the clean socks, answering the phone to assist parents, feeding the pets, and cleaning the floors with a broom or a mop.

For children ages 6-7

These children can take care of themselves by making their beds, brushing their teeth, combing their hair, and getting dressed.

They can be given responsibility for the pets food, water, and exercise. They can also vacuum the rooms and mop the floors, help in folding the laundry, empty the indoor trash cans, and answer phones with supervision.

For children ages 8-11

The chores that they can do for themselves include taking care of their personal hygiene, keeping their bedroom clean, become responsible for doing their homework and taking care of their belongings, and waking up by using an alarm clock instead of making their parents wake them up.

Among the family chores, they can take part in washing the dishes, washing the car, preparing simple meals on their own, cleaning the bathroom with supervision, raking the leaves outside the house, and learning to use the washer and dryer. They can also put all the laundry away, and take the garbage out to the curb for pick up.

These children can do all the things the younger kids can do, and can change light bulbs and change the vacuum bag.

They can also do dusting, cleaning of bathrooms and washing the dishes.

They can wipe the mirrors, mow the lawn with supervision, watch over their younger siblings, and prepare an occasional family meal.
