SUMER Cradle of Civilization

Sumer is located in the southernmost part of Mesopotamia. It is the modern day Iraq. The Sumerians were established in southern Babylonia. It is situated between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Mesopotamia is from the Greek words for the land between the rivers. It was over 7,000 years ago that the Sumerians inhabited Mesopotamia. They were the first known people to stay there.

The Sumerians were able to establish an advanced system of writing known as cuneiform or wedge- shaped symbols. It was the earliest form of writing. The Sumerians also took pride of their amazing arts, mathematics, architecture, astronomy and other disciplines.

Who were the Sumerians?

The Sumerians were one of the first known civilizations. These people called themselves Saggiga which meant black- headed or bald- headed people. They called their country Kengi, which meant the civilized land.

The origin of these people remains a mystery. Though uncertain of their origin, many believe that the Sumerians came from India, while others thought that they were from Anatolia in modern- day Turkey.

AKKAD

The Akkadian civilization was one of the first famous empires. The Akkadian Empire ruled Mesopotamia for years. The Akkadians were a Semitic group of people. They controlled southern Mesopotamia during the third millennium.

Sargon the Great founded the Akkadian civilization. His city was known as Akkad and took control of the other city-states. When his city was attacked by Uruk, a powerful Sumerian city, Sargon fought back and successfully conquered Uruk .

Sargon the Great was able to conquer all the Sumerian city- states. He was able to unite Southern and Northern Mesopotamia. The Sumerians and the Akkadians began to form alliances and work together.

Sargon the Great ruled the land from 2334 to 2279 BC. He established the first Semitic dynasty when he conquered the whole of southern Mesopotamia. His territory included the parts of Syria, Anatolia and Elam.

Naram- Sin was the grandson of Sargon the Great. He ruled for over years and was one of the great kings of Akkad. His reign was believed to be the highest point of the Akkadian Empire.
