Elsa, the protagonist of the book, is a seven-year-old special needs girl and is extremely smart for her age. Because of this, she is unable to make friends with anyone and is bullied at school. Her grandmother understood her problems and told her stories about a fantasy land. With these stories, she tried to teach Elsa about real life in ways she could understand. After Granny dies, Elsa goes on a mission and discovers more about the past of her neighbors.

She was a doctor who worked in war-torn areas and emergency situations to save lives while risking her own. Unknown to Elsa, Granny had saved the lives of almost everyone who lived in the house.
