Preface

About This Book

The bodys immune system usually works efficiently to ward off disease, but things can go wrong. Sometimes dysfunctions result from inherited conditions. Sometimes they are caused when bacteria or viruses, such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), slip past normal immune system defenses. Sometimes, for reasons poorly understood, the immune system begins to attack normal body cells. This can result in an autoimmune disease. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that up to 23.5 million Americans suffer from autoimmune disease and that the prevalence is rising.

Immune System Disorders Sourcebook, Fourth Edition provides information about immune system function and related disorders. Readers will learn about inherited, acquired, and autoimmune diseases, including primary immune deficiency, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), lupus, uveitis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and Graves disease. Information about symptoms and treatments is included, along with tips for coping with an immune disorder, suggestions for caregivers, glossaries of terms and diseases, and a directory of additional resources.

How to Use This Book

This book is divided into parts and chapters. Parts focus on broad areas of interest. Chapters are devoted to single topics within a part.

describes how the immune system works and explains both immune response and tolerance. It summarizes the types of disorders that affect the immune system and describes factors that influence its function. Research initiatives to help better understand the immune system and learn how it can be manipulated to produce health benefits are also described.

acquired immune system diseases that are not present at birth but that are acquired later. These can result from exposure to HIV, the bodys response to a transplant, or the inability to tolerate a substance in the environment. Inherited immune deficiency diseases explains the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that result when genetic defects cause essential parts of the immune system to be missing or to malfunction. Inherited immune deficiency diseases include primary immune deficiency (PID), ataxia-telangiectasia, selective IgA deficiency, and severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), which is more commonly known as bubble boy disease.

explains the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases caused when immune cells mistake the bodys own cells as invaders and attack them. It covers about Addison disease, Behet disease, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and Inflammatory myopathies.

describes immune system reactions to medical treatments. Topics include serum sickness, blood transfusion reaction, transplant rejection, and anaphylaxis.

provides information for people concerned about the diagnostic challenges involved in identifying immune disorders. Facts about the tests most commonly used, including blood, gene, and allergy tests, are provided.

contains information about drug and gene therapies, plasmapheresis, and stem cell transplantation. Treatments used for specific immune diseases are also described.

provides tips for individuals and families living with an autoimmune or immune system disease, immunization recommendations, and suggestions for students and travelers with immune system disorders.

offers glossaries of immune system terms and autoimmune diseases and a directory of resources.
