Preface

This book is for you if you want to significantly increase your chance of getting a great job.

Creating a compelling CV and covering letter is not enough. Thats just the first step it gets you to the interview or assessment centre. You then need to perform well in all stages of the assessment process.

Now Youve Been Shortlisted is valuable for job seekers at all stages of their career, from undergraduates seeking their first job to mature job seekers looking for a change or to move on up all who want specific guidance for a forthcoming interview or assessment centre. It is also a great resource for those advising job seekers, including career coaches and university career advisors.

The book is written in a simple and easy-to-understand style, but dont think the content is simplistic. I draw on my 20+ years of assessment centre design and assessor experience to help you understand what assessors are looking for and to increase your chance of success once you are shortlisted.

The book is structured so you can quickly go to the relevant section. The scene is set in the introduction with details of the employer perspective and preparing for success. The next section covers psychometric testing, and following on from the introductory chapter here you will learn how to do your best in verbal reasoning and critical thinking tests in Chapter 4, numerical tests in Chapter 5, abstract reasoning and other tests in Chapter 6, and personality questionnaires in Chapter 7.

How to perform well in assessment centres is covered in the next seven chapters after this. Following an introduction in Chapter 8, there are chapters on group exercises in Chapter 9, written exercises in Chapter 10, in-tray exercises in Chapter 11, presentations in Chapter 12, role-plays in Chapter 13, and other exercises in Chapter 14.

The art of doing well at interview is then covered in three chapters, looking at preparation, answering questions and what to ask at the end of an interview. Chapters then follow on appearance and body language, on the day of the assessment centre/interview, and after the interview, helping you to not only do an in-depth review but guiding you to follow up after the interview to reinforce why you are right for the job.

You are going to increase your chance of success with this book, so the final chapter provides hints and tips on how to create a great impression and be effective in your new job.

Introduction

This book is for anyone who has received a youve been shortlisted letter and wants to feel more confident and prepared for their forthcoming interview or tests at a full assessment centre.

Youve got the letter and youve been shortlisted. For some people there will be one interview before they find out if they are successful, but for most it is the start of a series of steps. You could undertake three interviews: an initial interview with a recruitment consultant, an interview with HR and your possible line manager, before a final interview with several people at once. For others it will be an assessment centre with external consultants followed by a final interview with people within the company; or if you are applying to a new and growing company you may get the job offer following a quite informal meeting.
