Foreword
Ill be the first to admit that Imshall we saysensitive to misspellings. But I get it: Mistakes are made, pobodys nerfect. And some words really can be confusingespecially homophones, those words that are pronounced the same but spelled differently. We could have a long, technical talk about how to escape such devious grammatical traps. But Im an illustrator, not a linguist.

So in 2011 I decided Id rather see it all laid out in funny pictures and started a weekly blog called Homophones, Weakly. As it turns out, this approach resonated with a lot of people, from students to teachers, poets to graphic designers. This book represents a selection of my favorite drawings from the blogwith a few changes here and there to make them even better. I recognize there are many diverse factors that determine how each person pronounces the same word. And language is not an exact science anyway. So its important to me that this book not be taken as a call-to-arms for the grammar warriors among us, or as some comprehensive curriculum to study and memorize.

Instead, this is simply meant to be a fun, visual guide to a cohort of confusing words, and I hope you enjoy it. The following pages speak for themselves better than I can anyway, so lets end this foreword and move forward.
