Hi! Im Winnie the horse, and this book is all about horses like me. Keeping horsesis gre fun, but looking after us takes a lot of time and hard work. It also costsa lot of money. Would you make a good horse owner?
Being a good horse owner means making sure that Im always cared for. I need a safeplace to live, a field to run around in, and food and water. You need to groom meand look after me if Im sick. Then Ill quickly become your best friend.
Horses like me come in lots of different sizes and colors. Im a chestnut pony. Thatmean that my coat, mane , and tail are golden-brown. A pony is a small horse. Yourfirst horse may be a pony.
A good place to find your pet horse is an animal charity. They take in horses thathave been badly treated or are not wanted. They try to find good homes for these horses. Theywill advise you on the best horse for you.
Choose a horse that has a smooth, shiny coat, bright eyes, and pricked-up ears. My hooves are very important. They should not be cracked or split. Always have a horseor pony checked over by an expert before you get it.
Horses like company. In the wild, we live in big groups, called herds . If we liveon our own, we can feel lonely and unhappy. Make sure that you introduce new horsesto each other slowly. It may take them a while to get used to each other.
Horses dont mind living outdoors, but you still need to look after us every day.We must have a shelter where we can get out of the sun and bad weather. We can graze on the grass in a field, but make sure that we have clean water to drink.
The field we live in must be big enough for grazing and galloping around. Check thatthe grass is healthy. Some plants can make me sick. If my field gets wet and muddy,make sure that I have a dry place to stand.
If you keep a horse like me in a stable , youll need to give me lots of care. Makesure that my stable is big enough, with plenty of fresh air. A stable door is idealyoucan open the top half so that I can look out and see what going on.
Please check that I have a warm, dry, comfy bed made from straw or wood shavings.Muck out my stable every day. This means taking away any droppings and dirty bedding.Then make me a new, clean bed.
Horses like me need plenty of exercise to stay healthy. If you keep me outside, Ican gallop around freely in my field. Make sure that my field has a good, strongfence around it to stop me from escaping!
If I live in a stable , please let me out into the field regularly. If Im stuck insidefor too long, I can suffer and become sick. Try to let me out at the same time assome of my friends so that I have company.
If you want to ride me, you need a bridle , saddle , and saddle cloth. These are called tack . The saddle for you to sit on fits on my back. You need to learn how to put thetack on and how to take it off again after your ride.
If you look after your tack properly, it should last for many years. Wipe it downafter every ride, then clean and polish it thoroughly once a week. Look out for anysigns of wear and tear.
Outdoors, I love grazing on grass. If I live in a stable , I can munch good-qualityhay. To keep me healthy, you can also give me special horse feed. Put the feed ina bucket on the ground or in a manger attached to the stable wall.
I need to drink lots of water every day, otherwise I can become seriously sick. Pleasemake sure that I always have a supply of clean water in my field and stable.
