Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The bamboo fly rod still represents the pinnacle of the fly-fishing art; its apparent simplicity and delicacy belie the craftsmanship and strength that are the hallmarks of all great rods. A growing number of people have tried to learn the art of making bamboo rods from a shrinking number of secretive craftsmen. The revised and expanded Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods is the definitive reference for beginners and experts alike. Wayne Cattanach begins by explaining the qualities that distinguish bamboo from all other materials: It has a tensile strength akin to steel, yet it is very light.
He describes the process that will take anyone from lengths of hard, raw bamboo to a beautiful finished rod with clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations, including how to find the best supplies; select tools and materials; make heat treaters and binders; cut culms; straighten bamboo strips; plane and stagger strips; bind strips; apply finishes; mount the reel seat, ferrules, and tip-top; and much more. This is surely the most thorough book available for those who wish to make and fish their own bamboo fly rods.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Its a challenging task to make a bamboo fly rod but its just as big a challenge to write a book. Although Ive given many seminars on the subject, the transformation from spoken word to printed text has been a learning experience. Fortunately several friends have helped and encouraged me along the way. One person in particular has made this book possible Carlos Santos.

I met Carlos through our mutual interest in making fly rods. He dreamed of making his own bamboo fly rod, but he was struggling with the details and looking for advice. Through our conversations we discovered that we had many common interests, and over the years we have built a bond of friendship. Although we did not actually meet face-to-face until a year ago, I consider Carlos an old friend.

Other individuals who gave me valuable assistance and support in completing this project were Ron Barch, Glen Blackwood, Bob Hoekstra, and Joe Loverti. And at the Lyons Press I am indebted to Nick and Tony Lyons, Don Sedgwick, and Jay McCullough for their encouragement and editorial assistance.

Finally, I must thank my wife, Ben, and our children, Matt and Lyndi, for all their patience, understanding, and help.
