About the editors and contributors
The editors
Theodora Papatheodorou, PhD, is an early years educator and researcher. Her teaching and research interests are in the area of early childhood pedagogy and curriculum, childrens behaviour, social inclusion, multicultural education and bilingualism. She is the author of Behaviour Problems in the Early Years (2005) and co-editor (with Janet Moyles) of Learning Together: Exploring Relational Pedagogy, both published by Routledge. She is also the co-author (with Paulette Luff and Janet Gill) of Child Observation for Learning and Research (2011), published by Pearson.
Janet Moyles is Professor Emerita, Anglia Ruskin University and a play/early years specialist. She has worked as an early years teacher, head and HE tutor and has written and edited widely, including Just Playing? (OUP, 1989), The Excellence of Play (OUP, 2009) and Effective Leadership and Management in the Early Years (OUP, 2007). She has directed several research projects including Jills of All Trades? (ATL, 1996), Too Busy to Play? (Esmee Fairbairn Trust/University of Leicester, 19972000), SPEEL (Study of Pedagogical Effectiveness in Early Learning) (DfES, 2002) and Recreating the Reception Year (ATL, 2003).
The contributors
Ronit Alin works in the field of maths education, currently teaching in teacher development courses and designing maths learning activities, in part computer-assisted. For the last 10 years, she has been working as a lecturer in Ohalo Regional Teacher Training College, Israel. Ronit teaches pre-service kindergarten teachers the basics of mathematics, cognitive psychology of early childhood in maths study and the didactics of mathematics. The focus of her doctorate was maths education in the early years.
Linda Cooper gained a first-class honours degree in Education and Childhood Studies. As part of the Anglia Ruskin Undergraduate Student Research Placement Scheme, she worked as a co-researcher with Mallika Kanyal. Lindas main areas of research include childrens participation, mothering and feminism. The focus for her doctoral research is on generational changes in the way women access higher education.
Julia Druce is Senior Lecturer in Education Studies and Pathway Leader for the sector-endorsed Foundation Degree in Early Years Childcare and Education at Anglia Ruskin University. Julias professional development and post-graduate studies have centred mainly on practice-based play therapy, with a particular focus on supporting childrens social and emotional (holistic) development. The focus of her doctorate is play therapy.
Hasina Banu Ebrahim is currently Professor and Head of the discipline of Early Childhood and Foundation Phase Education (ECFPE) in the Faculty of Education, University of the Free State, South Africa. Her particular interest lies in the development of Early Childhood Foundation Phase Education (ECFPE, birth to 9 years) through a research focus and publications on early care and education, teacher development and policy priorities with special reference to the developing world context. She has been involved in research involving early literacy, barriers to learning in early childhood, knowledge transfer in the early years and indigenous models of early care and education.
Sue Gascoyne is an educational trainer and published author, focused on embedding sensory play experiences in the learning environment. She has led research projects, successfully provided mentoring, training and consultancy services for over 12 years, and founded early years educational resources supplier, Play to Z Ltd. A primary school governor and mother of two young children, many of Sues activities and resources are based on observations of her own childrens play.
Anne Hunt is a member of the Early Childhood Research and Development Team at the Early Childhood Centre, University of New Brunswick. This team has developed the New Brunswick Curriculum for Early Learning and Childcare and continues to work with early childhood educators to develop curriculum support documents. Anne has had a long career as an entrance class teacher in public schools and has also taught courses in early literacy, play, childrens literature and curriculum at both the Universities of New Brunswick and St Thomas in Canada.
