Many handicapped children have been and are being educated in ordinary schools. How many more can ordinary schools, many of which are at the moment experiencing great difficulties of their own, absorb, and what changes in philosophy and physical facilities are necessary? Contributions in this book, which come from many countries, throw valuable light on these most intricate problems.
I express my gratitude to Graham Burn for his work on this book, and to my wife, Anita Loring, who directed the International Study Group which was made possible by the joint sponsorship of the International Cerebral Palsy Society and the Spastics Society.
James Loring
Margaret R. Morgan
I have been given a delightfully general title for my paper, so I plan to discuss a topic which interests me particularly and which I hope will stimulate discussion, that of attitudes to disability, the effects these attitudes have on handicapped children and young people, and the ways in which these may help or hinder social integration.
I plan to take a critical sometimes self-critical but, I hope, positive line. However, I would like to make it clear that my criticisms are not directed to any one profession or group of people. Most apply to all of us, in whatever field we work, and I think it behoves each of us to question ourselves and our own attitudes, both to the disabled as a group and also to individual disabled people.
